Quick Answer
Type Hindi words in English letters the way they sound — for example “namaste! aap kaise hain?” — and the tool writes नमस्ते! आप कैसे हैं? in Devanagari as you type. Use double vowels for long sounds (aa = आ, ee = ई, oo = ऊ), capitals for special letters (T = ट, D = ड, N = ण, Sh = ष), and copy the result into WhatsApp, Word, Gmail or any app. Common words such as “hai” and “bharat” are spelled correctly automatically.
What is English to Hindi Typing?
English to Hindi Typing (इंग्लिश से हिंदी टाइपिंग) lets you write Hindi in Devanagari script using an ordinary English keyboard. You type words the way they sound in English letters — the way many of us already write Hindi on WhatsApp — and the tool converts them into proper Hindi characters. “namaste” becomes नमस्ते, “aap kaise hain?” becomes आप कैसे हैं?, and “bharat meraa desh hai.” becomes भारत मेरा देश है।. You can then copy the text into WhatsApp, Word, Google Docs, Gmail, Facebook, a school project or a government form.
This method is called phonetic transliteration. It is the easiest way to type Hindi for people who never learned the InScript or Remington Hindi keyboard layouts. Our tool uses its own transparent, rule-based engine: consonants, vowels and matras follow a simple guide, joined consonants become conjuncts automatically, and a built-in list of about 250 everyday words fixes spellings that rules alone cannot guess. Everything runs in your browser, so your text stays private and the tool keeps working even without internet once the page has loaded.

How Conjuncts Are Formed
In Devanagari, two consonants without a vowel between them join into a conjunct, written with a halant (्) or as a combined shape. The tool does this automatically: whenever you type a consonant directly after another consonant, it adds the halant to the first. So “s” + “t” + “e” in namaste gives स्ते, “p” + “r” gives प्र in pradesh, and “d” + “y” gives द्य in vidyaarthii. Your device's font then draws the correct joined shape. If you want two consonants to stay separate, type the vowel “a” between them: “kamal” → कमल.
The Built-in Word List
Phonetic rules cannot always tell whether a vowel is long or short, or whether a word uses ं: most people type “bharat”, not “bhaarat”, and “hai”, not “hæ”. To make everyday typing smoother, the tool recognises about 250 common words and writes their standard spelling — हिंदी, भारत, है, हैं, मैं, नहीं, क्यों, कहाँ, धन्यवाद, नमस्ते, अच्छा, लड़का, ज्ञान and many more, including major city and state names. You can switch the list off with its checkbox to use rules only, which is useful when you want full control over every letter.
Using Hindi Text Everywhere
The output is standard Unicode Devanagari — exactly what a Hindi keyboard produces — so it works in WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Gmail, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Excel, PowerPoint, Canva and government portals. Fonts such as Mangal, Nirmala UI, Kokila and Noto Sans Devanagari all display it. This is different from legacy fonts like Kruti Dev, which store English letters and only look Hindi with that font installed; if you have old Kruti Dev documents, convert them with our Kruti Dev to Unicode converter.
Phonetic Typing vs Hindi Keyboards
- Phonetic typing (this tool): no new layout to learn; ideal for occasional typing, messages and short documents.
- InScript keyboard: the government-standard Hindi layout built into Windows, Android and iOS; fastest for regular typists once learned.
- Remington (Kruti Dev style): the traditional typewriter layout still used in some typing exams; it produces legacy text unless used with a Unicode Remington layout.
- Voice typing: convenient for long passages; try our Speech to Text tool.
Who Uses Hindi Typing?
- Students writing Hindi assignments, projects and applications.
- Teachers preparing worksheets and notices.
- Job seekers filling Hindi sections of forms.
- Small businesses writing Hindi posters, menus and WhatsApp messages.
- Bloggers and YouTubers writing Hindi titles and descriptions.
- Families sending festival wishes in Hindi.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Single vowels for long sounds — “bat” gives बत; write “baat” for बात.
- Lower-case for retroflex letters — “pandit” gives पंदित; write “panDit” for पंडित.
- Capital letters by habit inside words — they change letters (N = ण); keep words lower-case except for special letters.
- Editing the Hindi box and then typing in the English box — the Hindi is regenerated; make manual edits last.
Troubleshooting
- A word looks wrong — check the guide for long vowels (aa, ee, oo) and special letters (T, D, N, Sh), or edit the Hindi box.
- ं appears where you wanted न् — untick the anusvara option (with the word list also off, hindi → हिन्दि; type hindii for हिन्दी).
- A common word spelled in an unexpected way — untick the word list to use rules only.
- Boxes instead of Hindi letters — your device lacks a Devanagari font; most phones and computers include one.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I type in Hindi with an English keyboard?
Type the Hindi words using English letters as they sound — “mera naam raahul hai” — and the tool converts them to मेरा नाम राहुल है in Devanagari. Then copy the Hindi text and paste it wherever you need it.
How do I type long vowels like आ, ई and ऊ?
Double the vowel: aa for आ (or the ा matra), ee or ii for ई (ी), and oo or uu for ऊ (ू). A single a, i or u gives the short sounds अ, इ (ि) and उ (ु). Capital A, I and U also give the long forms.
How do I type ट, ड, ण and ष?
Use capitals: T for ट, Th for ठ, D for ड, Dh for ढ, N for ण and Sh for ष. Lower-case t, th, d, dh, n and sh give त, थ, द, ध, न and श.
How do I type ं, ँ and ः?
Type M for anusvara (ं), ~ for chandrabindu (ँ) — for example haa~ → हाँ — and H for visarga (ः). With the anusvara option on, an n before a consonant becomes ं automatically, so sundar → सुंदर.
How do I type half letters and conjuncts like स्त or प्र?
Just type the consonants together: namaste → नमस्ते, pradesh → प्रदेश, vidyaarthii → विद्यार्थी. The tool adds the halant automatically. Use ksh for क्ष and jn for ज्ञ.
Why does “bharat” come out right but “bhaarat” is also accepted?
Rules alone cannot know whether a vowel is long or short, so the tool includes a list of about 250 common words that are fixed automatically — bharat, hindi, hai, main, nahin and many more. Writing the long vowel yourself (bhaarat) always works too.
Why does a capital letter at the start of a word not give ट or ड?
So that normal sentence capitalisation (“Namaste”) still works, a capital at the start of a word is ignored. To start a word with ट, ड, ण or ष, add another capital later in the word: ThIk → ठीक, DAk → डाक. Common words like thiik are also in the word list.
Can I correct the Hindi output?
Yes. The Hindi box is editable, so you can fix any word directly. Note that typing again in the English box regenerates the Hindi, so make edits at the end.
Will the Hindi text work in WhatsApp, Word and Gmail?
Yes. The output is standard Unicode Devanagari, the same as typing with a Hindi keyboard, so it displays correctly in all modern apps and fonts such as Mangal, Nirmala UI and Noto Sans Devanagari.
Is this the same as Google's Hindi input?
No. Google Input Tools uses a large dictionary and predictions. This tool uses transparent phonetic rules plus a small word list, works offline once loaded and never sends your text anywhere. You may need the guide for less common words.
Can I convert Kruti Dev text with this tool?
No — for old Kruti Dev documents use our Kruti Dev to Unicode Converter, which converts that font's encoding into normal Hindi text.
Is it free?
Yes. English to Hindi Typing is free, unlimited and needs no sign-up.
