Quick Answer
Drop your CSV file (or several) into the box or paste CSV text, check the preview, and press Download Excel. You get a real .xlsx file: plain numbers become numbers you can add up, while PIN codes, phone numbers, long IDs and dates stay exactly as written, so Excel cannot strip leading zeros or turn 1E+15 into a different number. Several CSVs can go into one workbook as separate sheets.
What Is a CSV to Excel Converter?
A CSV file (comma-separated values) is the simplest way to store a table: every line is a row and commas separate the columns. Banks, GST portals, e-commerce dashboards, school result systems, CRMs, Google Forms and almost every database can export CSV. But CSV is plain text — it cannot hold multiple sheets, column widths or proper number types — and when you double-click one, Excel guesses what each cell means. That guessing is where trouble starts.
This CSV to Excel converter (CSV से Excel) turns CSV into a genuine .xlsx workbook. Numbers you can calculate with become real numbers, while values that only look like numbers — PIN codes, phone numbers, roll numbers, account and Aadhaar-style IDs — are kept exactly as written. You can also combine many CSV files into one workbook with a sheet for each, which is ideal for monthly reports or exports split by branch.
How to Use It
- Add your data: drop one or more .csv, .tsv or .txt files, or paste CSV text into the box.
- Check the preview: the first rows appear in a table with the row and column count and the delimiter that was detected.
- Fix the delimiter if needed: if all data appears in one column, choose semicolon, tab or pipe manually.
- Pick how to handle many files: one workbook with a sheet per CSV, or separate .xlsx files in a ZIP.
- Download: press Download Excel and open the file in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice.
The Leading-Zero Problem (and How This Tool Solves It)
Open a CSV directly in Excel and you may see these changes:
| In the CSV | Excel opening the CSV | This converter's .xlsx |
|---|---|---|
| 080001 (PIN code) | 80001 | 080001 |
| 007 (roll number) | 7 | 007 |
| +919876543210 | 9.19877E+11 | +919876543210 |
| 1234567890123456 (16-digit ID) | 1.23457E+15 (last digit lost) | 1234567890123456 |
| 03/04/2026 | A date, possibly in the wrong order | 03/04/2026 (text) |
| 1250.75 | 1250.75 | 1250.75 (number) |
The rule the converter follows is simple and predictable: only plain numbers — digits with an optional minus sign and decimal point, no leading zero, at most 15 digits — become numbers. Everything else stays text. Excel can only store 15 significant digits, so longer IDs must be text to survive; that is why the limit is exactly 15. If you prefer every cell as text, untick the number option.
Combining Many CSV Files into One Workbook
Exports are often split: one file per month, branch, class section or marketplace. Drop them together and each becomes a sheet named after its file (Excel limits sheet names to 31 characters and forbids symbols like / ? * [ ], so names are tidied automatically and duplicates get a number). If you want individual Excel files instead — for example to email each branch its own report — choose the ZIP option.
Delimiters, Quotes and Encodings
- Comma is standard, but many European exports use a semicolon because the comma is their decimal mark.
- Tab-separated files (TSV) come from copy-paste and some databases.
- Pipe ( | ) appears in bank statements and legacy systems.
- Quoted cells like "Sharma, Rohit" or values containing line breaks are parsed correctly, so commas inside quotes don't split columns.
- UTF-8 text, including Hindi and other Indian scripts, is read correctly; a leading byte-order mark (BOM) is removed automatically.
Common Uses
- GST and accounting: convert GSTR exports, Tally or bank CSVs into Excel for reconciliation without losing invoice numbers or GSTINs.
- E-commerce sellers: turn order, payment and inventory exports from marketplaces into tidy workbooks; SKU codes with leading zeros stay intact.
- Schools and coaching institutes: combine section-wise mark lists into one workbook with a sheet per class.
- HR and payroll: employee IDs, PF/UAN and bank account numbers remain exact.
- Marketing: merge exported leads, form responses and email lists into one file.
- Developers and analysts: hand non-technical colleagues a proper .xlsx instead of a raw CSV.
CSV vs Excel (XLSX): What's the Difference?
| Feature | CSV | XLSX |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Plain text | Zipped XML workbook |
| Multiple sheets | No | Yes |
| Cell types | Everything is text; programs guess | Numbers, text, dates stored explicitly |
| Formatting, formulas | No | Yes |
| Best for | Moving data between systems | Working with data in a spreadsheet |
Keep CSV for importing into software; use XLSX when people will read, filter or calculate. Need to go the other way? Use our Excel to CSV converter.
Limits Worth Knowing
- Rows: an Excel sheet holds up to 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns. For bigger files, use our Split CSV tool first.
- File size: up to 50 MB per CSV here; very large files depend on your device's memory.
- Formatting: the workbook contains your data with sensible column widths, but no colours or formulas — CSV doesn't carry them.
What Happens to Empty Cells and Uneven Rows?
Empty cells stay empty in the workbook, and blank lines in the CSV are skipped so they don't create empty rows. If some rows have fewer columns than the header — common when an export ends a line early — the missing cells are simply left blank; rows with extra columns keep the extra values in additional columns. The status line tells you how many rows had uneven quotes or column counts, so you can decide whether the source export needs fixing before you share the file with others.
Privacy: Your Data Stays on Your Device
Spreadsheets often contain customer lists, salaries, phone numbers and bank details. This converter loads two open-source libraries — PapaParse for reading CSV and SheetJS for writing Excel — and does all the work inside your browser. Your file is never uploaded to any server, and closing the tab clears everything.
Troubleshooting
- Everything is in one column: the file probably uses semicolons or tabs — choose the delimiter manually.
- Strange characters (ä, ह): the file was saved in an old encoding rather than UTF-8. Re-export it as "CSV UTF-8" from the source program.
- A warning about rows: some rows have unmatched quotes or a different number of columns. The data still converts; check those rows in the preview.
- Numbers I wanted as numbers stayed text: values with commas (1,250) or currency symbols (₹500) are kept as text. Remove the symbols in the source, or use Find & Replace in Excel.
The Manual Way in Excel (and Why It's Slower)
Excel can import a CSV safely, but it takes several steps. In current versions go to Data → From Text/CSV, choose the file, check that File Origin is "65001: Unicode (UTF-8)", pick the delimiter, then click Transform Data and set columns such as PIN code or phone number to Text before loading. In older versions the Text Import Wizard asks the same questions. It works, but you must remember to do it for every file and every sensitive column — and it does not combine several files into separate sheets in one go. This converter applies safe rules automatically, so a single click gives you a correct workbook.
In Google Sheets, File → Import → Upload lets you choose the separator and untick "Convert text to numbers, dates and formulas". Again, it handles one file at a time, and you need to download the result as .xlsx afterwards.
Tips for Clean Spreadsheets
- Use one header row with short, unique column names — they become the first row of the sheet.
- Keep one type of data per column: don't mix amounts and notes in the same column.
- Remove totals rows from exports before converting if you plan to sort or filter.
- Freeze the header in Excel (View → Freeze Top Row) after opening, and use Format as Table for quick filters.
- Save exports as "CSV UTF-8" whenever the source program offers it, to protect Hindi names and the ₹ sign.
Quick Glossary
- Delimiter: the character that separates columns — comma, semicolon, tab or pipe.
- XLSX: the default Excel workbook format since Excel 2007.
- BOM: an invisible marker at the start of a UTF-8 file that helps Excel recognise the encoding.
- Scientific notation: Excel's 1.23E+15 style for very large numbers, which hides digits.
Why Use This Converter?
It is fast, free and private, combines files into sheets, and above all does not damage your data — the most common complaint about opening CSVs in Excel. Working with other formats too? Try CSV to JSON, XML to Excel or Excel to PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert CSV to Excel?
Drop the CSV file into the box above or paste its text, check the preview and press Download Excel. The converter creates a real .xlsx workbook in your browser.
Why does Excel remove leading zeros from my CSV?
When Excel opens a CSV directly it guesses each cell's type, so 080001 becomes 80001 and long numbers turn into 1.23E+15. This converter stores such values as text in the .xlsx, so they stay exactly as written.
Can I combine several CSV files into one Excel file?
Yes. Drop all the files at once and choose 'One workbook, one sheet per CSV'. Each sheet is named after its file.
Which delimiters are supported?
Comma, semicolon, tab and pipe. The delimiter is detected automatically, or you can choose it yourself if detection guesses wrong.
Will Hindi text and ₹ symbols display correctly?
Yes. The .xlsx format stores Unicode, so Hindi, other Indian scripts, ₹ and emoji open correctly in Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice.
Are numbers stored as numbers?
Plain numbers such as 42, -3.5 or 1250.75 become real numbers you can sum. Values with leading zeros, + signs, commas, more than 15 digits, or dates stay as text so nothing is changed.
Why are dates kept as text?
A date like 03/04/2026 means 3 April in India but 4 March in the US. Keeping it as text avoids silent mix-ups; you can convert the column in Excel with Text to Columns if needed.
Is there a file size limit?
Each file can be up to 50 MB. Excel itself allows at most 1,048,576 rows per sheet.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Parsing and the Excel file are created in your browser; the data never leaves your device.
Does it work with TSV files?
Yes. Tab-separated files are detected automatically.
Can I open the result in Google Sheets?
Yes. Upload the .xlsx to Google Drive or open it with Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc or Numbers.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up and no watermark.
