AI crawlers

robots.txt is a public request, not a lock — reputable crawlers follow it, but it does not hide pages or stop bad bots. To keep a page out of search results use a noindex tag; to protect private content use a password.

Quick Answer

Pick a preset — for example “Allow search & AI search, block AI training crawlers” — adjust the paths you want to keep out of crawlers (like /admin/ or /cart/), add your sitemap URL and download the file. Upload it to the root of your site so it is available at yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Remember: robots.txt is a request that reputable bots follow, not a security lock.

What is a Robots.txt Generator?

A Robots.txt Generator (Robots.txt जनरेटर) creates the small text file that tells web crawlers which parts of your site they may visit. Every serious website has one at https://yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Search engines like Google and Bing read it before crawling; so do the crawlers that gather content for AI models and AI search engines. A good robots.txt keeps bots out of admin areas, carts and endless search-result pages, points them to your sitemap, and — increasingly — states whether AI companies may use your content.

The file's syntax is simple, but mistakes are costly: one wrong slash can block your whole site from Google. This free generator builds a correct file from clear choices. Start from a preset, list paths to keep crawlers out of, add your sitemap, and decide per bot which AI crawlers to block — including the difference between training crawlers, AI search crawlers and user-triggered agents. Then copy or download the result and upload it to your site.

Key Features

  • Five presets — allow all, block AI training, block all AI, WordPress, block everything.
  • 14 AI crawlers with owner and purpose, colour-coded as training, AI search or user agent.
  • Disallow and Allow paths for all bots, one per line.
  • Sitemap line with your full URL.
  • Optional Crawl-delay for crawlers that support it.
  • Standards-compliant output following RFC 9309.
  • Copy or download as robots.txt.

How to Create robots.txt — Step by Step

  1. Choose a preset that matches your goal.
  2. Enter your sitemap URL, for example https://example.com/sitemap.xml.
  3. Edit the Disallow list — one path per line, such as /admin/ or /checkout/.
  4. Add Allow exceptions if a disallowed folder contains something crawlers need.
  5. Tick the AI crawlers you want to block.
  6. Download robots.txt and upload it to your site's root folder (public_html on most hosts).
  7. Check it by opening yourdomain.com/robots.txt and testing in Google Search Console.

Example Output

With the default settings the generator produces:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /admin/
Disallow: /cart/
Disallow: /search?

Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml

This lets every crawler visit the whole site except the admin area, the cart and internal search result URLs, and tells them where the sitemap is. Choosing “block AI training crawlers” adds a group like User-agent: GPTBot, User-agent: ClaudeBot, User-agent: CCBot … followed by Disallow: / above the general rules.

Companies add and rename crawlers over time, so check their documentation occasionally. Blocking AI search bots can stop your site being cited in AI answers, which may reduce referral traffic; many publishers block training crawlers but allow search bots.

robots.txt Syntax in Brief

  • User-agent: which crawler the following rules apply to; * means all.
  • Disallow: a path prefix the crawler should not fetch; an empty value allows everything.
  • Allow: an exception inside a disallowed area.
  • Sitemap: the absolute URL of an XML sitemap (can appear anywhere).
  • Wildcards: * matches any characters and $ marks the end of a URL — /*.pdf$ matches all PDF files.
  • Most specific match wins — Google applies the longest matching rule, so Allow: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php overrides Disallow: /wp-admin/.

What robots.txt Can and Cannot Do

robots.txt is a public request. Google, Bing and reputable AI companies follow it, but nothing forces a crawler to obey, and anyone can read the file — so listing secret folders there can actually advertise them. It also controls crawling, not indexing: a blocked URL can still appear in Google if other pages link to it. To keep a page out of results, allow crawling and add a noindex meta tag (our Meta Tag Generator can create it). To protect private content, require a login. Use robots.txt for what it is good at: guiding well-behaved crawlers away from low-value or duplicate URLs.

robots.txt for WordPress

WordPress sites usually block /wp-admin/ while allowing /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php, which themes and plugins use, and often block internal search URLs such as /?s=. The WordPress preset sets these for you. Don't block /wp-content/ or /wp-includes/ — they contain the CSS, JavaScript and images Google needs to render your pages correctly. Upload the file to your site root, or paste it into an SEO plugin that manages robots.txt.

Choosing an AI Crawler Strategy

There is no single right answer — it depends on how you earn from your content.

  • Allow everything — maximum visibility. Your pages can be used for training and cited in AI answers. Suits tools, product pages and brands that want reach.
  • Block training, allow AI search — a popular middle path. Models are not trained on your content by crawlers that respect robots.txt, but assistants can still find, quote and link to you, which can send visitors.
  • Block all AI crawlers — maximum control, common for paid content, news archives and original research. You may lose citations and referral traffic from AI search.

Whatever you choose, robots.txt affects only future crawling by bots that honour it; it does not remove content already collected. Review the decision every few months as new crawlers appear.

robots.txt, sitemaps and llms.txt

robots.txt says where crawlers may go; an XML sitemap lists the pages you want discovered. Some sites now also publish an llms.txt file — a proposed, informal convention offering AI tools a concise Markdown summary of the site's most useful pages. It is not an official standard and not every AI company reads it, but it is harmless to add alongside a proper robots.txt and sitemap.

Common Uses

  • Setting up a new website or blog.
  • Opting out of AI model training while staying visible in search.
  • Keeping crawlers away from carts, checkout, admin and filter URLs.
  • Blocking a staging site completely.
  • Adding a sitemap reference for faster discovery.
  • Reducing server load from aggressive crawlers.
  • Stopping crawlers from wasting time on endless filter and sort URLs in online shops.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • “Disallow: /” under User-agent: * on a live site — it blocks everything, including Google.
  • Blocking CSS and JavaScript — Google may misjudge mobile-friendliness.
  • Using robots.txt to hide private pages — the file is public; use authentication.
  • Combining robots.txt blocks with noindex — crawlers can't see the noindex if they can't crawl the page.
  • Uploading to the wrong folder — it must be at the domain root.
  • Forgetting the trailing slash — Disallow: /admin also blocks /administrator.

Troubleshooting

  • Google reports “blocked by robots.txt” for a page you want indexed — remove or narrow the matching Disallow line.
  • Changes not picked up — Google caches robots.txt for up to about a day; request a recrawl in Search Console.
  • 404 for /robots.txt — the file is in the wrong place or named incorrectly (it must be lowercase robots.txt).
  • An AI bot still visits — check its exact user-agent name in your server logs; some services use several crawlers.

Quick Glossary

  • Crawler / bot / spider: software that fetches web pages automatically.
  • User-agent: the name a crawler identifies itself with.
  • Crawling vs indexing: fetching a page vs listing it in search results.
  • Sitemap: an XML list of a site's URLs for search engines.
  • RFC 9309: the 2022 standard for the Robots Exclusion Protocol.
  • Noindex: a meta tag asking search engines not to list a page.
  • Training crawler: a bot that collects content to train AI models.
  • AI search crawler: a bot that fetches pages to cite them in AI-generated answers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is robots.txt?

robots.txt is a plain text file at the root of a website that tells crawlers which parts of the site they may visit. It follows the Robots Exclusion Protocol, standardised as RFC 9309 in 2022.

Where do I put robots.txt?

In the top-level folder of your domain so it loads at https://yourdomain.com/robots.txt. A file in a sub-folder is ignored. Each subdomain needs its own file.

Does robots.txt stop a page from appearing in Google?

Not reliably. It stops crawling, but a blocked URL can still be indexed if other sites link to it, usually without a description. To keep a page out of search results, allow crawling and add a noindex meta tag, or protect it with a password.

How do I block AI crawlers like GPTBot?

Tick the bots you want to block, or choose a preset. The generator adds a group such as “User-agent: GPTBot / Disallow: /”. Reputable AI companies say their crawlers respect these rules.

Will blocking Google-Extended remove my site from Google Search?

No. Google-Extended is a separate token that controls use of your content for Gemini models; Googlebot, which powers Google Search, is not affected.

What is the difference between training and AI search bots?

Training crawlers (like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, CCBot) collect content to train models. AI search bots (like OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot) fetch pages to show and cite them in AI search answers. User agents (like ChatGPT-User) fetch a page when a person asks the assistant to. The “block AI training” preset blocks only the first group, so your site can still appear in AI search.

Is crawl-delay supported?

Some crawlers such as Bing honour Crawl-delay, but Google ignores it. Leave it empty unless you have a specific reason.

Should I add my sitemap?

Yes. A Sitemap line helps search engines discover all your pages. Use the full https:// URL of your sitemap file.

Can I block a single page?

Yes — add its path, such as /private-offer.html, to the disallow list. Paths are case-sensitive and match from the start of the URL.

Do bad bots obey robots.txt?

No. Scrapers and malicious bots can ignore it, and the file is public, so it can even reveal where sensitive pages are. Use authentication and server-side protections for anything private.

How do I test my robots.txt?

After uploading, open yourdomain.com/robots.txt in a browser and use Google Search Console's robots.txt report to check that Google can fetch and parse it.

Is the generator free?

Yes. It is free, unlimited and needs no sign-up.
