Quick Answer

Drop your CSV, choose how to split it — a number of rows per file, a number of files, or one file per value in a column — and check the list of parts. The header row is repeated in each file and quoted line breaks are handled, so no row is ever cut in half. Press Download all parts to get every file in one ZIP. Everything runs in your browser.

Why Split a CSV File?

CSV exports grow fast. A year of orders, a full customer list or a database dump can easily reach hundreds of thousands of rows — and then things start to break. Upload forms reject files over a few megabytes, email marketing tools cap imports at a set number of contacts, older Excel versions stop at 65,536 rows and even modern Excel stops at 1,048,576, and very large files take ages to open or freeze a laptop.

A CSV splitter (CSV फ़ाइल विभाजित करें) solves this by cutting one big file into smaller, valid CSV files. This tool does it in your browser in three ways — by rows per file, into a chosen number of files, or one file per value in a column — repeats the header in every part, and gives you everything in a single ZIP. Nothing is uploaded, so customer and sales data stay on your computer.

How to Use It

  1. Drop the CSV (.csv, .tsv or .txt, up to 200 MB) into the box.
  2. Choose Split by: rows per file, number of files, or value in a column.
  3. Enter the number of rows or files, or pick the column.
  4. Review the parts table: every output file is listed with its number of data rows.
  5. Press Download all parts (ZIP).

Three Ways to Split

MethodWhat it doesExample
Rows per fileEvery part gets the same number of data rows; the last holds the remainder25,000 contacts at 10,000 per file → 3 files (10,000 + 10,000 + 5,000)
Number of filesRows are shared out evenly; parts differ by at most one row10 rows into 3 files → 4 + 3 + 3
Value in a columnOne file per distinct value in the chosen columnOrders split by City → orders-Patna.csv, orders-Delhi.csv…

The column method is especially useful for sending each branch, salesperson, school section or supplier only their own rows. Empty values are grouped into a file ending in "blank" so no row goes missing.

Header in Every Part

Most systems need the header row to understand the columns, so it is repeated at the top of every file by default. That means each part is a complete, standalone CSV you can import or open on its own. If your file has no header — every line is data — untick the option and all lines are split evenly.

Rows Are Never Cut in Half

Simple splitters count line breaks, which corrupts data whenever a cell contains a line break inside quotes — common in addresses, product descriptions and comments. This tool parses the CSV properly with PapaParse, so a quoted cell such as "Flat 4, MG Road" followed by a line break and Patna inside the same quotes stays inside its row, commas inside quotes stay inside their cell, and every part has the same columns as the original. The delimiter (comma, semicolon, tab or pipe) is detected automatically and reused in the output.

Common Uses

  • Email and SMS campaigns: marketing tools often limit how many contacts one import can contain; split a big list into batches that fit.
  • Marketplace and portal uploads: bulk product or inventory uploads frequently cap file size or rows per file.
  • Branch-wise or region-wise reports: split a company-wide export by branch, state or salesperson and send each team its own file.
  • School and coaching data: split a combined student list by class or section.
  • Opening in Excel or Google Sheets: keep each part under Excel's 1,048,576-row limit, or Google Sheets' cell limit, so it opens smoothly.
  • Data processing: process a huge dataset in batches, or share sample chunks with a colleague.

Choosing the Right Number of Rows

Work backwards from the limit you are facing:

  • Row limit (for example "maximum 5,000 records per import"): set rows per file to that number.
  • File-size limit (for example "maximum 2 MB"): divide your file size by the limit to estimate how many parts you need, add one for safety, and use "Number of files". A 9 MB file with a 2 MB limit needs at least 5 parts; choose 6.
  • Excel: 1,000,000 rows per file leaves a margin under the 1,048,576-row limit.

The parts table updates as you type, so you can see exactly how many files you'll get before downloading.

What You Download

All parts arrive in one ZIP named after your file, for example customers-split.zip. Inside, files are numbered in order — customers-part1.csv, customers-part2.csv… — and when there are ten or more parts the numbers get leading zeros (part01, part02) so they still sort correctly in any file manager; with the column method, files are named after the column value, like orders-Patna.csv. Most operating systems open ZIP files with a double-click; on Android and iPhone, the Files app can extract them. Tick Add BOM if the parts will be opened in Excel and contain Hindi text or the ₹ sign.

Compared with Other Ways to Split

Developers often split files on the command line with the split utility, and spreadsheet users copy and paste blocks of rows into new files. Both have drawbacks. Line-based tools like split -l don't understand CSV quoting, so a cell containing a line break gets cut across two files, and the header appears only in the first part. Copy-paste in Excel is slow, error-prone with large files and impossible once the file exceeds Excel's row limit. Writing a script in Python works, but takes time and needs a programming setup. This page combines the best of each: proper CSV parsing, a header in every part, splitting by column value and an instant ZIP — with no installation and no code.

Worked Example

An online store exports 48,250 orders as orders.csv and wants to import them into an accounting tool that accepts at most 10,000 rows per file. Drop the file, keep Rows per file, type 10000, and the table shows five parts: four with 10,000 rows and one with 8,250. Each starts with the same header row. Download the ZIP, extract it and import orders-part1.csv to orders-part5.csv one after another. Later, to send each city's manager their own orders, switch to Value in a column, pick the City column and download one file per city.

Big Files and Performance

Files up to 200 MB can be split. The whole file is read into memory, so a laptop or desktop browser with enough RAM handles the largest files best; a phone is fine for smaller exports. If the browser struggles, close other tabs and try again, or split in two stages — first into a few large parts, then split those. Splitting by column is limited to 1,000 distinct values; choose a column with fewer unique entries, such as state instead of customer name.

Tips

  • Sort first in your spreadsheet if you want related rows to stay together when splitting by rows.
  • Clean the split column before splitting by value. Spaces around values are trimmed automatically, but capitals matter: "Patna" and "PATNA" become two separate files (the second is named with a "(2)" suffix in the ZIP so nothing is overwritten). Use one consistent spelling for the best result.
  • Keep the original file: splitting never changes it, but it's your master copy.
  • Re-join parts later by converting them all with CSV to Excel, which can put each part on its own sheet.

Works on Any Device

The splitter runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari on computers, tablets and phones, with nothing to install. It is ideal for quick jobs on the go, while very large files are best split on a computer.

Privacy

Large CSV exports often contain customer names, phone numbers, emails and sales figures. This splitter runs entirely in your browser using the open-source PapaParse and JSZip libraries. Your file is never uploaded, logged or stored.

Quick Glossary

  • Header row: the first line of a CSV that names the columns.
  • Delimiter: the character separating columns, such as a comma.
  • ZIP: a single compressed file that holds many files.
  • BOM: an invisible marker that helps Excel read UTF-8 text.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I split a CSV file into multiple files?

Drop the CSV into the box, choose rows per file, number of files or a column, check the parts list and press Download all parts. All files arrive in one ZIP.

Is the header row repeated in every file?

Yes, by default. Untick 'Repeat the header row' if your file has no header row — then every line is treated as data and split evenly.

Can I split a CSV by the value in a column?

Yes. Choose 'Value in a column' and pick the column — for example City — to get one file per city. Empty values go into a '(blank)' file.

How do I split a CSV into equal parts?

Choose 'Number of files' and enter how many. Rows are shared out evenly, so the parts differ by at most one row.

Will rows with line breaks inside cells be cut?

No. The CSV is parsed properly, so quoted cells containing commas or line breaks stay in one row.

How large a file can I split?

Up to 200 MB. Very large files need plenty of memory, so a desktop browser works best.

How many parts can I create?

Up to 1,000 files at once. If your settings would create more, use more rows per file or a column with fewer distinct values.

Why split a CSV at all?

Many upload forms, email tools and older Excel versions limit file size or row count. Smaller parts also open faster and are easier to share.

Does it keep the original delimiter?

Yes. Parts use the same delimiter detected in your file — comma, semicolon, tab or pipe.

Will Hindi text survive?

Yes. Parts are UTF-8; tick 'Add BOM' if you will open them in Excel.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Splitting and zipping happen entirely in your browser.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up and no limits on use.
