Quick Answer

Drop your Excel workbook and choose how to split it: save each sheet as a separate file, split one sheet into parts with a fixed number of rows, or create one file per value in a column such as Branch or City. The header row is repeated in every part. Pick .xlsx or CSV, check the parts list and press Download all parts to get a single ZIP. Only cell values are copied, not formatting.

Why Split an Excel File?

Workbooks tend to collect everything: twelve monthly tabs, a sheet per branch, or one enormous sheet with every order of the year. Then someone needs only their part. Emailing the whole file shares data people shouldn't see, upload portals reject large files, and copying sheets out one by one with "Move or Copy" is tedious and easy to get wrong.

This Excel splitter (Excel फ़ाइल विभाजित करें) does the job in seconds, right in your browser. Save every sheet as its own workbook, break one long sheet into parts of a set size, or create one file per value in a column — for example a file per branch, salesperson, class or supplier — and download everything as one ZIP. Your workbook is never uploaded.

How to Use It

  1. Drop your workbook (.xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .xlsb or .ods, up to 50 MB).
  2. Choose Split by: each sheet into its own file, rows per file, or value in a column.
  3. For rows or column mode, pick the sheet and enter the number of rows or choose the column.
  4. Select the output format: Excel (.xlsx) or CSV.
  5. Check the parts table, then press Download all parts (ZIP).

Three Ways to Split

ModeResultTypical use
Each sheet into its own fileOne file per tab, named after the sheetMonthly tabs, sheets per branch or class
Rows per fileOne sheet cut into parts of N data rowsUpload limits, very long sheets
Value in a columnOne file per distinct value in the chosen columnSend each region, team or vendor only its rows

In rows and column modes, the header row is copied to the top of every part by default, so each file is complete on its own. Rows with an empty value in the chosen column are collected into a file ending in "blank".

Example: One File per Branch

A sales sheet has 6,000 rows with a Branch column containing Patna, Ranchi and Gaya. Choose Value in a column, pick the sheet and the Branch column, and the parts table shows three files with their row counts. Download the ZIP and you have sales-Patna.xlsx, sales-Ranchi.xlsx and sales-Gaya.xlsx, each with the header and only that branch's rows — ready to email to each branch manager, without exposing other branches' figures.

XLSX or CSV Parts?

  • Excel (.xlsx): best for people. Plain numbers are stored as numbers so totals work; PIN codes, phone numbers and IDs longer than 15 digits stay text so they aren't changed. Each part's sheet is named after the part.
  • CSV: best for software imports. Parts are UTF-8 with a BOM, so Excel shows Hindi and ₹ correctly when the file is opened.

Values Only — What Isn't Copied

The splitter copies each cell's value as Excel displays it. That keeps the data exact and the files small, but it means some things are not carried over:

  • Formulas become their last calculated results.
  • Formatting — colours, fonts, borders, number formats, column widths you set — is not copied; sensible widths are applied automatically.
  • Dates and percentages are copied as the text you see (for example 21-10-2026 or 18%), so they look the same but are not date or number cells in .xlsx parts. Convert them with Text to Columns if you need to calculate with them.
  • Charts, images, comments, merged cells, filters and macros are not copied.

If you need an exact copy of a sheet with all its formatting, use Excel's own Move or Copy → Create a copy into a new workbook. For everything else — sharing data, uploads and imports — values-only parts are cleaner and safer.

Common Uses

  • Accounts and finance: separate a yearly ledger into monthly files, or split a party-wise outstanding list for each customer.
  • Sales and distribution: send each branch, distributor or salesperson only their own orders and targets.
  • Schools and coaching: split a combined result or fee sheet by class or section for class teachers.
  • HR: split an employee master by department or location.
  • E-commerce: break a huge product sheet into parts that fit a marketplace's bulk-upload limit.
  • Data handover: save each tab of a multi-sheet report as its own file for different stakeholders, so each person receives a small, focused workbook instead of the full file with every department's data.

The Manual Way vs This Tool

In Excel, separating sheets means right-clicking each tab, choosing Move or Copy, ticking "Create a copy", picking "(new book)" and saving — repeated for every sheet. Splitting by column value means filtering, copying the visible rows, pasting into a new workbook, saving, and repeating for every value. VBA macros can automate it but require the desktop app, macro permissions and some coding. This page does any of these splits in one go, on any device, without macros and without touching your original file.

Choosing Rows per File

Match the number to your limit. If a portal accepts 5,000 rows per upload, enter 5000. If the limit is a file size, a rough guide is to check how many rows the full file has, how big it is, and divide proportionally — then go a little lower for safety. The parts table updates instantly, showing how many files you will get and how many rows each contains.

What You Download

All parts arrive in one ZIP named after your workbook, for example sales-split.zip. Files are named after the sheet, the part number (part1, part2…) or the column value, with characters that aren't allowed in file names replaced by dashes. If two values differ only in capital letters, the second file gets a "(2)" suffix so nothing is overwritten. Windows and macOS open ZIP files with a double-click; on phones, the Files app can extract them.

Large Workbooks

Workbooks up to 50 MB can be opened. Large files are read entirely into memory, so a desktop or laptop browser with plenty of RAM gives the best results. Splitting by column is limited to 500 distinct values at once — choose a broader column (such as state rather than customer name) if you hit the limit. Excel's own maximum of 1,048,576 rows per sheet applies to the input.

Tips for Clean Parts

  • Put the header in row 1 and remove title rows above the table before splitting.
  • Use consistent spellings in the split column; spaces around values are trimmed, but "Patna" and "PATNA" are different values.
  • Sort first if you want related rows to stay together in rows mode.
  • Keep the master file: splitting never changes your original workbook, so make future edits there and simply split it again whenever you need fresh parts.
  • Need a PDF for printing? Convert a part with Excel to PDF.

Troubleshooting

  • "Could not read this file": the workbook may be password-protected or damaged.
  • Only one sheet listed: "Each sheet" mode needs a workbook with several tabs; the tool switches to rows mode when there is just one.
  • Too many parts: increase rows per file or choose a column with fewer unique values.
  • Numbers look like text: values with commas, currency symbols or percent signs are kept as displayed text; clean them in Excel if needed.

No Excel Needed

You don't need Microsoft Excel installed — or even a computer. The page reads the workbook itself, so it works on a Chromebook, a Linux PC, an Android phone or an iPhone. Open the workbook from email, WhatsApp or your Files app, split it, and share each part straight from the downloaded ZIP. Because everything happens on the device, it is quick even on a slow connection once the page has loaded, and nothing is ever sent to a server.

Privacy

Workbooks often hold salaries, customer details and financial figures. This splitter uses the open-source SheetJS and JSZip libraries inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored — close the tab and the data is gone.

Quick Glossary

  • Workbook: an Excel file, which can contain several sheets (tabs).
  • Header row: the first row naming each column.
  • Distinct value: each different entry in a column, such as each branch name.
  • ZIP: one compressed file that holds many files.

Why Use This Splitter?

It handles the three splits people actually need, repeats headers, protects IDs and leading zeros, and keeps your data private — free, on any device. For CSV files use Split CSV; to bundle files of your own, try Create ZIP File.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I split Excel sheets into separate files?

Drop the workbook, keep 'Each sheet into its own file', and press Download all parts. Every sheet becomes its own .xlsx (or CSV) named after the sheet, all in one ZIP.

Can I split one large sheet into smaller files?

Yes. Choose 'Rows per file', pick the sheet and enter the number of data rows each file should contain.

Can I split an Excel sheet by the value in a column?

Yes. Choose 'Value in a column', pick the sheet and the column — for example Branch — to get one file per branch.

Is the header row kept in every file?

Yes, by default each part starts with the original header row. Untick the option if the sheet has no header.

Are formulas and formatting copied?

No. Parts contain cell values as Excel displays them; formulas become their results, and colours, charts, images and merged cells are not copied.

Will leading zeros and long IDs be kept?

Yes. Values such as 080001 or 16-digit IDs stay text in .xlsx parts, while plain numbers remain numbers you can calculate with.

Should I save the parts as XLSX or CSV?

Choose .xlsx for sharing with people who use Excel. Choose CSV for importing into software; CSV parts are UTF-8 with a BOM so Excel shows Hindi correctly.

How many parts can I create?

Up to 500 at once. Use more rows per file, or a column with fewer distinct values, if you need fewer files.

Does it work with .xls and .ods files?

Yes — .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .xlsb and .ods workbooks are supported.

Can it open password-protected workbooks?

No. Remove the password in Excel first, then split.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Reading, splitting and zipping all happen in your browser.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up or watermark.
