Quick Answer
Drop your Excel file into the box, choose the sheet you want and press Download CSV — or press All sheets (ZIP) to get one CSV per sheet. Values are exported exactly as Excel displays them, formulas become their calculated results, and the file is UTF-8 so Hindi text and the ₹ sign survive. Choose semicolon if the CSV is for a system that expects it.
Why Convert Excel to CSV?
Excel workbooks are perfect for people, but many systems only accept CSV. Bulk-upload pages on e-commerce marketplaces, GST and accounting software, email marketing tools, school and HR portals, databases and programming languages all expect plain comma-separated text. CSV is also the safest format to archive data or to share it with someone who doesn't have Excel, because any program can read it.
This Excel to CSV converter (Excel से CSV) opens your .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .xlsb or .ods file in the browser, lets you pick a sheet — or all of them — and gives you a clean UTF-8 CSV. No Excel installation is needed, which makes it handy on a phone, a Chromebook or a shared computer.
How to Use It
- Drop your workbook into the box or tap to choose it.
- Pick a sheet from the list; the first rows appear in the preview with the row and column count.
- Choose a delimiter — comma for most systems, semicolon, tab or pipe if the destination asks for it.
- Keep "Add BOM" ticked if you will reopen the CSV in Excel; untick it for strict systems that reject a BOM.
- Download the current sheet, or press All sheets (ZIP) for one CSV per sheet.
What You See Is What You Get
Inside an Excel file, a date is really a serial number (21 October 2026 is stored as 46316) and an amount may carry hidden decimals. Exporting the raw values would give you numbers nobody recognises. This converter exports each cell's formatted value — the text Excel displays:
| Cell in Excel | Stored internally | In your CSV |
|---|---|---|
| 21-10-2026 | 46316 | 21-10-2026 |
| ₹1,250.00 | 1250 | ₹1,250.00 |
| 080001 (custom format) | 80001 | 080001 |
| =SUM(B2:B9) showing 4,500 | Formula + cached result | 4,500 |
| 18% | 0.18 | 18% |
If a system needs plain numbers without currency symbols or thousands separators, change the column's format to General or Number in Excel before converting.
Formulas Become Values
CSV holds data only, so formulas are exported as the result Excel last calculated and saved in the file. Workbooks saved by Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice include these results. A few programs that generate spreadsheets automatically skip saving results; if formula cells come out empty, open and re-save the file in a spreadsheet program, then convert again.
UTF-8, BOM and Hindi Text
CSV has no built-in way to say which character encoding it uses. Modern systems assume UTF-8, which covers Hindi, all Indian scripts, ₹ and emoji. Excel on Windows, however, may open a UTF-8 CSV as an old Western encoding, turning "मीना" into gibberish. The fix is a byte-order mark (BOM) — three invisible bytes at the start of the file that tell Excel "this is UTF-8". It is on by default here. A few strict importers treat the BOM as part of the first column name; if an upload complains about the first header, untick the option and download again.
Exporting Every Sheet at Once
A workbook with monthly tabs, branch-wise sheets or a separate sheet per class would normally need "Save As CSV" repeated for each sheet — and Excel's Save As only saves the active sheet, a common source of missing data. Here, All sheets (ZIP) writes one CSV per sheet in a single download, named after each sheet. Hidden sheets are included in the sheet list too, so nothing is silently skipped.
Choosing the Right Delimiter
| Delimiter | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Comma ( , ) | The standard — databases, Google Sheets, most upload forms and programming tools |
| Semicolon ( ; ) | Excel in many European locales and systems where the comma is the decimal mark |
| Tab (TSV) | Pasting into other programs, data with many commas inside text |
| Pipe ( | ) | Some bank, payroll and legacy mainframe imports |
Cells that contain the delimiter, quotes or line breaks are automatically wrapped in quotes according to the CSV standard (RFC 4180), so a name like "Sharma, Rohit" stays in one column.
Common Uses
- Marketplace bulk uploads: convert product and price sheets for catalogue uploads.
- Accounting and GST: prepare invoice lists and ledgers for import into accounting software.
- Email and SMS campaigns: export contact lists for marketing tools.
- Developers and analysts: load spreadsheet data into Python, R, SQL databases or JavaScript.
- School and HR portals: upload student or employee lists in the CSV format the portal requires.
- Archiving: store tables in a simple, future-proof format.
What CSV Can't Keep
CSV is just text, so these are dropped: formulas (results are kept), cell colours and fonts, merged cells (the value appears in the first cell only), charts, images, comments, data validation and multiple sheets in one file. If you need a faithful copy for printing, use Excel to PDF instead.
Works on Phones Too
Received an Excel attachment on WhatsApp or email and need a CSV for an upload form? Open this page in Chrome or Safari on your phone, tap the box, choose the file from Downloads or Files, and download the CSV — no Excel app or account required. The preview table scrolls sideways so you can check wide sheets on a small screen before downloading. For very large workbooks, a laptop or desktop browser is faster because it has more memory, but typical sheets with a few thousand rows convert in a second or two even on a mid-range phone.
Private by Design
Workbooks often hold salaries, customer details and financial data. The converter uses the open-source SheetJS library inside your browser to read the file and builds the CSV locally. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored, and the data disappears when you close the tab.
Troubleshooting
- "Could not read this file": the workbook may be password-protected or damaged. Remove protection in Excel and try again.
- Numbers show as 1.23E+15: the cell is formatted that way in Excel. Format the column as Number with 0 decimals, or as Text, then convert.
- Empty first rows or columns: the CSV starts at the first cell that holds data (for example C5), and completely blank rows are skipped, so you get a compact table.
- Importer rejects the first column: untick "Add BOM".
- Very large files are slow: files close to 50 MB need plenty of memory; a desktop browser handles them best.
The Manual Way in Excel
In Excel you can use File → Save As and choose "CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited)". It works, but there are catches: only the active sheet is saved, Excel warns that features will be lost, the workbook in front of you is now the CSV (so later edits can go to the wrong file), and the delimiter follows your computer's regional settings — on some systems you get semicolons without asking. Older versions also lack the UTF-8 option, which breaks Hindi text. In Google Sheets, File → Download → CSV exports only the current sheet too. This converter avoids all of these: your original file is untouched, you choose the delimiter yourself and every sheet can be exported together.
For Developers
The output follows RFC 4180: fields containing the delimiter, double quotes or line breaks are quoted, quotes inside fields are doubled, and lines end with CRLF, which every CSV parser accepts. With the BOM turned off the file is plain UTF-8, ready for pandas.read_csv, COPY in PostgreSQL, LOAD DATA in MySQL or any JavaScript CSV library. Because cells are exported as displayed text, set number columns to the General format in the workbook when you need machine-readable values without thousands separators.
Tips for a Clean Export
- Put headers in the first row and remove title rows or notes above the table.
- Unmerge cells before exporting so every row has its own value.
- Remove totals and subtotal rows if the CSV will be imported into another system.
- Check dates: choose a clear format such as 2026-10-21 (ISO) if the destination is international.
- Preview first: the table above the download button shows exactly what will be written.
Quick Glossary
- XLSX / XLS: the modern and the older (Excel 97–2003) Excel workbook formats.
- ODS: the OpenDocument spreadsheet format used by LibreOffice Calc.
- Delimiter: the character separating columns in a CSV file.
- RFC 4180: the common specification describing how CSV files quote fields and end lines.
- BOM: an invisible marker that tells Excel a CSV is UTF-8.
Why Use This Converter?
It reads every common spreadsheet format, exports all sheets in one go, keeps values exactly as you see them, protects Hindi text with UTF-8 and never uploads your data. Going the other way? Use CSV to Excel. Need smaller files? Try Split Excel, or turn a sheet into XML.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert Excel to CSV?
Drop the Excel file into the box, pick the sheet, and press Download CSV. The conversion happens in your browser.
Can I convert all sheets at once?
Yes. Press All sheets (ZIP) to download a separate CSV for every sheet, named after the sheet.
Why does Hindi text look broken when I open the CSV in Excel?
Excel sometimes opens CSV files in an old encoding. Keep 'Add BOM' ticked — the invisible marker tells Excel the file is UTF-8, so Hindi and ₹ display correctly.
What happens to formulas?
CSV cannot store formulas, so each formula cell is exported as the last value Excel calculated and saved in the file.
Are dates and numbers kept as they look?
Yes. Values are exported as Excel displays them — for example 21-10-2026 or 1,250.00 — not as internal serial numbers.
Which delimiter should I choose?
Comma is standard. Choose semicolon for systems or European Excel versions that expect it, tab for TSV, or pipe for some bank and legacy imports.
Does it support old .xls files?
Yes — .xls, .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb and OpenDocument .ods files are supported.
Can it open password-protected Excel files?
No. Remove the password in Excel first (File → Info → Protect Workbook), then convert.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The workbook is read and converted in your browser and never leaves your device.
Will leading zeros be kept?
Yes, if Excel shows them. A cell displaying 080001 is written as 080001 in the CSV.
What about hidden sheets, colours and charts?
Every sheet, including hidden ones, is listed. Colours, charts, images and comments are not part of CSV and are dropped.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up and no limits on the number of files.
