How to Resize a Signature — Step by Step

1. Sign on plain white paper with a black or dark blue pen. Sign a little larger than usual.
2. Take a photo from directly above in daylight, with the signature filling much of the frame and no shadow from your phone.
3. Open the Signature Resizer and choose the photo. Use Rotate 90° if needed.
4. Adjust Clean background until the paper is pure white and the strokes are unbroken.
5. Pick an ink colour — black is the safest for most forms.

How the Cleaning Works

The tool first measures the brightness of every pixel. The brightest 10% is treated as the paper and the darkest 2% as the ink, which adapts automatically to a dim or slightly yellow photo. Each pixel is then placed on a scale between ink and paper. Pixels close to the paper become pure white, pixels close to the ink become solid colour, and pixels in between become smooth edges so the strokes do not look jagged.

The Clean background slider moves the point at which a pixel counts as paper. Higher values remove more grey — good for shadows and uneven light — but can thin out very light strokes. Lower values keep faint strokes but may leave a grey haze. The default of 50 works for most phone photos.

After cleaning, the tool finds the bounding box of the strokes, adds a small margin, and fits that area into the output size while keeping its proportions, so your signature is never stretched or squashed.

Understanding Max and Min KB

A 140 × 60 pixel signature with a white background is a very small JPG — usually just 3 to 6 KB even at high quality. That is a problem when a form says "between 10 KB and 20 KB", because the file is too small rather than too big.

When you enter a Min size, the tool adds padding inside the JPG file in the form of a JPEG comment segment, which image viewers and upload checks ignore when displaying the picture. The signature pixels stay exactly the same; only the file size increases. The result is a standard JPG that opens everywhere. The tool counts the minimum as 1,024 bytes per KB and the maximum as 1,000 bytes per KB, so the file passes checks that use either definition.

How to Sign for a Clean Digital Upload

The quality of the final image depends mostly on the original signature. Use a black gel pen or a medium-point ball pen, which gives an even, dark line; very fine pens and pencils produce faint strokes that can break up when resized to 140 × 60 pixels. Sign in your normal style but about one and a half times larger than usual, leaving some space on all sides. Place the paper on a flat, light surface, hold the phone parallel to it, and tap the screen to focus on the ink before taking the photo. Daylight from a window, without direct sun, gives the most even background. If you sign several times, choose the version that matches the signature on your other documents, because some organisations compare them.
