Quick Answer

Choose the language of your document, then drop the TIFF scan into the box. Each page is read with OCR inside your browser and the text appears below, with '--- Page n ---' markers for multi-page files. When it finishes, copy the text or download it as a .txt file. The first run downloads the OCR engine and language data once; your scan itself is never uploaded.

What Is TIFF OCR?

Scanners, fax machines and document-imaging systems usually save pages as TIFF images. A TIFF of a letter looks like text, but to a computer it is just a grid of pixels — you can't search it, copy a sentence from it or paste it into a document. OCR (optical character recognition) fixes that by recognising the letters in the image and turning them into real, editable text.

This TIFF to Text converter (TIFF से टेक्स्ट) runs OCR in your browser with Tesseract, the widely used open-source OCR engine originally developed at HP and later improved at Google. It reads every page of single and multi-page TIFFs, supports Hindi and ten other Indian languages alongside English, and never uploads your scans.

How to Use It

  1. Choose the language printed in the document. For a page mixing English and Hindi — common in government forms and bills — choose English + Hindi.
  2. Drop the TIFF into the box (PNG and JPG work too). The first time, the OCR engine and language data download; this takes a little longer.
  3. Watch the progress line as each page is read. Text appears in the box page by page.
  4. Press Stop at any time to end a long job; finished pages stay.
  5. Copy the text or download it as .txt, then proofread names, numbers and dates.

Languages Supported

ScriptLanguages
LatinEnglish
DevanagariHindi, Marathi (and English + Hindi mixed)
BengaliBengali
Gujarati / GurmukhiGujarati, Punjabi
Dravidian scriptsTamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam
Perso-ArabicUrdu

Choosing the correct language matters a lot: OCR uses the language's character set and dictionary to decide between similar-looking shapes. Reading a Hindi page with English selected produces gibberish. If the language changes, the tool re-reads the current file automatically.

Multi-Page TIFFs

Document feeders often save a whole file — a 15-page contract, a set of bank statements, a court order — as one multi-page TIFF. This tool reads up to 50 pages in order and inserts clear markers (--- Page 1 ---, --- Page 2 ---) so you always know where each page's text begins. Reduced-size preview images that some scanners embed are skipped automatically, so you don't get duplicated text.

Getting the Best Accuracy

OCR quality depends far more on the scan than on the software. Follow these guidelines for the cleanest text:

  • Scan at 300 DPI. Below 200 DPI, small letters and Indian-script matras become hard to recognise; above 400 DPI rarely helps.
  • Keep pages straight. Skewed pages and curved book spines confuse line detection.
  • Use good contrast. Dark text on a clean white background works best; faded photocopies and coloured paper reduce accuracy.
  • Avoid shadows and glare when photographing documents instead of scanning.
  • Pick the exact language, or English + Hindi for mixed pages.
  • Printed text only: handwriting, signatures and decorative fonts are not reliably recognised.

Even with a perfect scan, always proofread important details such as names, amounts, account numbers and dates. OCR can confuse similar shapes — 0 and O, 1 and l, or ि and ी in Devanagari.

Fax and Black-and-White TIFFs

Faxes and many office scans are saved as 1-bit black-and-white TIFFs compressed with CCITT Group 3 or 4. They are fully supported. Standard-mode faxes have only about half as many lines per inch vertically as horizontally (roughly 204 × 98 DPI), which makes letters look squashed; the tool stretches such pages back to normal proportions before reading, which noticeably improves recognition.

Common Uses

  • Re-using old documents: get editable text from scanned letters, notices and reports instead of retyping.
  • Searching archives: extract text from TIFF records so it can be indexed and searched.
  • Government and legal papers: pull text from orders, affidavits and land records in Hindi or regional languages.
  • Accounts: copy figures and references from scanned invoices and statements.
  • Students and researchers: quote passages from scanned books and theses.
  • Accessibility: turn scanned pages into text that screen readers can read aloud.

What the Output Looks Like

The result is plain text in reading order: lines of text separated by line breaks, paragraphs separated by blank lines where the engine detects them. Formatting such as bold, font sizes, columns and tables is not preserved. For two-column pages the engine usually reads one column after the other, but complex layouts can interleave. If you need a shareable document that keeps the original appearance, convert the TIFF with TIFF to PDF and keep this text alongside it. To count words or characters in the result, paste it into our Word Counter.

After Extraction: Cleaning Up the Text

OCR output sometimes contains extra line breaks in the middle of sentences, because the engine keeps the line endings of the original page. Paste the text into our Remove Line Breaks tool to join lines into proper paragraphs, then fix any misread characters. Search the scan for the words that matter most — names, amounts, dates — and compare them carefully with the extracted text before you rely on it for anything official, such as an application, a legal reply or an important accounts entry.

Worked Example

A tehsil office gave you a scanned land record as khatauni.tif — three pages in Hindi with some English headings. Select English + Hindi, drop the file, and the progress line shows "Reading page 1 of 3…", then pages 2 and 3. The box fills with the Hindi text and English labels, separated by page markers, and the status line reports roughly how many words were found. Copy it into a document, correct any misread khasra numbers or names against the scan, and you have an editable version without retyping three pages.

TIFF to Text vs Image to Text vs OCR PDF

ToolBest forOutput
TIFF to Text (this page)Single or multi-page TIFF scans and faxesPlain text, page by page
Image to TextPhone photos and screenshots (JPG, PNG, WebP)Plain text
OCR PDFScanned PDF filesPlain text, page by page

All three use the same Tesseract engine and language data, so accuracy is similar; the difference is the kind of file each one accepts — TIFF, a photo or screenshot, or a scanned PDF.

Privacy: Your Scan Stays on Your Device

Scanned documents often carry sensitive details — Aadhaar and PAN numbers, addresses, bank information, medical history. Many online OCR services upload your file to their servers. Here, the TIFF is decoded and the OCR runs inside your browser tab using Tesseract.js, a WebAssembly build of the Tesseract engine. The only downloads are the engine itself and the language data, fetched once from a public CDN; your image is never sent anywhere, and nothing is stored after you close the page.

Speed and Limits

OCR is computationally heavy. A typical A4 page at 300 DPI takes a few seconds on a modern laptop and longer on a phone; Indian scripts usually take a little longer than English. Files can be up to 200 MB with up to 50 pages each; for longer documents, split them first. The first run in a session includes the one-time download of the engine and the chosen language — a few megabytes — and switching language downloads that language's data.

Troubleshooting

  • Random symbols instead of words: the wrong language is selected — choose the document's language and it will re-read automatically.
  • "No readable text found": the scan may be too faint, blurry or low resolution. Rescan at 300 DPI with better contrast.
  • The engine won't download: check your internet connection, or allow cdn.jsdelivr.net if a network filter blocks it.
  • Columns are mixed together: complex layouts confuse reading order; crop the page into columns as separate images.
  • Very slow on a phone: use a computer for long multi-page scans.

Works on Any Device

It runs in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iPhone — nothing to install. You can even paste a screenshot or image from the clipboard instead of choosing a file.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I extract text from a TIFF file?

Choose the document language, drop the TIFF into the box and wait while each page is read. Then copy the text or download it as .txt.

Does it read multi-page TIFFs?

Yes. Every page (up to 50) is read in order, and the text is separated with '--- Page 1 ---', '--- Page 2 ---' markers.

Can it read Hindi text?

Yes. Choose Hindi, or English + Hindi for mixed documents. Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Urdu are also available.

How accurate is the OCR?

On clean, straight, 300 DPI printed scans, accuracy is usually very high. Handwriting, blurry photos, skewed pages, stamps and unusual fonts reduce accuracy, so always proofread important text.

Is my scan uploaded?

No. The image is decoded and read in your browser. Only the OCR engine and language data are downloaded from a CDN the first time.

Why is the first run slower?

The OCR engine and the language data (a few MB) download once. Later runs in the same session start much faster.

Can it read fax TIFFs?

Yes. Black-and-white CCITT fax TIFFs are supported, and standard-mode fax pages are stretched to their correct proportions before reading.

Can it read handwriting?

Not reliably. Tesseract is designed for printed text; neat handwriting may partly work, but expect many errors.

Does it keep tables and layout?

No. The output is plain text in reading order. For tables in text-based PDFs, use PDF to CSV.

Can I stop a long job?

Yes. Press Stop; the text from finished pages stays in the box.

Does it work with PNG or JPG?

Yes, single PNG and JPG images work too. For photos of documents, our Image to Text tool offers the same OCR.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up and no page limits beyond 50 pages per file.
