Quick Answer
Tap the box to choose files (or drag them in), or press Add a folder to include a whole folder with its sub-folders. Check the list, name your ZIP, pick a compression level and press Create ZIP — the .zip downloads straight away. Everything happens in your browser, so your files are never uploaded. Note that photos, videos and PDFs are already compressed, so zipping mainly bundles them rather than shrinking them.
What Is a ZIP File?
A ZIP file is a single file that contains other files and folders, usually compressed to take less space. It is the most common way to send many files at once: instead of attaching twenty documents to an email or uploading photos one by one, you send one .zip. Every modern operating system — Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS — can open ZIP files without extra software.
This ZIP file creator (ZIP फ़ाइल बनाएँ) builds the ZIP inside your browser. Add files or an entire folder, pick a compression level and download. Unlike many online zip tools, your files are never uploaded to a server, which makes it safe for personal documents, client work and anything confidential — and quick, because nothing has to travel over the internet.
How to Use It
- Add files: tap the box to choose files, or drag and drop them. You can add more in several rounds.
- Add a folder (optional): press Add a folder to include everything in a folder, keeping its sub-folders.
- Review the list: each file appears with its size; remove any you don't want with the ✕ button, or press Clear list to start again.
- Name the ZIP and choose a compression level.
- Press Create ZIP. A progress percentage shows while compressing, then the .zip downloads and the status line reports the original and final sizes.
Compression Levels Explained
| Level | Speed | Size | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal (recommended) | Fast | Good compression | Almost everything |
| Maximum | Slower | Slightly smaller | Large text, CSV, logs and code |
| Fast | Fastest compression | A bit larger | Big batches where time matters |
| No compression (store) | Instant | Same as originals | Photos, videos, music, PDFs |
The ZIP uses the standard DEFLATE method (levels 1, 6 and 9), which every unzip program supports.
How Much Will My Files Shrink?
Compression works by finding repeated patterns. Some formats are full of them; others have already been compressed by their own format, so there is little left to squeeze:
- Shrink a lot: plain text, CSV, JSON, XML, HTML, code, logs, uncompressed BMP or TIFF images, and many database exports — often to a fraction of their size.
- Shrink a little: Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx) and PowerPoint (.pptx) files are already ZIP containers internally, so expect small savings.
- Barely shrink: JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC photos; MP4 and MOV videos; MP3 and AAC audio; PDFs; and existing ZIP or RAR archives.
For those formats, a ZIP is about convenience — one tidy file — not size. To actually make photos, PDFs or videos smaller, use a dedicated tool such as our Image Compressor, Compress PDF or Video Compressor first, then zip the results.
Zipping Whole Folders
Press Add a folder and choose a folder: every file inside it, including files in sub-folders, is added with its path — for example Project/images/logo.png. When the ZIP is extracted, the same folder structure reappears. You can mix folders and individual files in one ZIP. Folder selection is supported in current desktop versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari; on phones, folder picking depends on the browser, so choosing multiple files is the reliable option there. Empty folders are not stored, because the browser only reports files.
Everyday Uses
- Email attachments: send a set of documents as one attachment instead of many.
- Job and college applications: bundle certificates, mark sheets and ID scans when a portal asks for a single file.
- Client deliveries: deliver design files, photos or reports in one tidy package.
- Assignments and projects: students can zip a project folder with its code and resources for submission.
- Backups: keep a dated copy of important folders.
- WhatsApp and Telegram: share many documents as one file instead of dozens of messages.
- Uploading to websites: some upload forms accept one file only — a ZIP lets you include everything.
Worked Example
Suppose you are applying for a job and the portal accepts one file. You have a resume PDF (300 KB), four certificate scans as JPG (about 1.2 MB each) and a cover letter in Word (40 KB). Add all six files, name the ZIP Asha-Kumari-Application and choose Normal. The ZIP will be only slightly smaller than the 5.1 MB total, because the PDF and JPGs are already compressed — but the portal now receives everything in one neat file. If the portal had a 2 MB limit, the right move would be to shrink the scans first with an image compressor and then zip them.
Now imagine a developer sending a folder of CSV exports and log files totalling 50 MB. Text files like these compress extremely well, so the same steps can produce a ZIP that is a small fraction of the original size, which is much quicker to email or upload.
ZIP vs RAR vs 7z
| ZIP | RAR | 7z | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opens without extra software | Yes, on every OS | Usually needs an app | Usually needs an app |
| Compression | Good | Better | Best |
| Creating it | Free everywhere | Proprietary tools | Free, open source |
| Best for | Sharing with anyone | Personal archives | Maximum compression |
For sharing, ZIP is the safest choice because the recipient never needs to install anything.
Why "No Upload" Matters
Most online zip tools send your files to their server, compress them there and send them back. That means your documents sit on someone else's computer, even briefly, and large files take a long time to upload and download again. Here, the open-source JSZip library runs on your own device: files are read from your disk, compressed in memory and saved straight back. Nothing is transmitted, logged or stored, and it works even on a slow connection once the page has loaded. Close the tab and every trace is gone.
Zipping on a Phone
On Android or iPhone, open this page in Chrome or Safari, tap the box and select several files from your gallery, Downloads or Files app. Press Create ZIP and the archive is saved to your downloads, ready to attach to an email or share in a chat app. Phones have less memory than computers, so keep large video batches for a laptop or desktop computer, where there is much more room to work.
Size Limits and Performance
You can add up to 2 GB in total. Because the ZIP is built in memory, the practical limit depends on your device: a modern laptop or desktop handles large batches comfortably, while phones are best kept to a few hundred megabytes. For very large or numerous files, the Store level is fastest because it skips compression. The standard ZIP format used here supports up to 65,535 files per archive. If a very large batch fails, split it into two or three ZIPs.
What About Passwords?
This tool creates normal, unencrypted ZIP files. Password-protected ZIPs need encryption that browser libraries like JSZip do not provide, and the old "ZipCrypto" password scheme is weak anyway. If you need to protect files, use a desktop archiver that supports AES-256 encryption, or share files through a service with access controls. For PDFs specifically, our Protect PDF tool can add a password to each document.
How to Open (Unzip) a ZIP File
- Windows: double-click the ZIP to browse it, or right-click → Extract All.
- macOS: double-click the ZIP; it extracts next to the original.
- Android: open it in the Files app and tap Extract.
- iPhone and iPad: tap the ZIP in the Files app; it extracts automatically.
- Linux: use your file manager or
unzip file.zip.
Tips
- Name files clearly before zipping — the recipient sees those names when they extract.
- Compress big media first with dedicated tools; zipping won't shrink them much.
- Use folders to organise many files, then add the folder to keep the structure.
- Check email limits: many email services cap attachments at around 20–25 MB; split very large sets into several ZIPs.
Quick Glossary
- Archive: a single file containing many files, such as a ZIP.
- DEFLATE: the standard compression method used in ZIP files.
- Store: adding files to a ZIP without compressing them.
- Extract / unzip: taking the files back out of the archive.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I create a ZIP file online?
Choose or drag your files into the box (or press Add a folder), name the ZIP, and press Create ZIP. The .zip file downloads immediately.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The ZIP is built inside your browser with the open-source JSZip library, so your files never leave your device.
Can I zip a whole folder?
Yes. Press Add a folder and select it; all files inside, including sub-folders, are added with their folder structure kept.
How much smaller will my files get?
It depends on the type. Text, CSV, Word, Excel and code files often shrink a lot. JPG photos, MP4 videos, MP3s, PDFs and existing ZIPs are already compressed and barely shrink.
Which compression level should I choose?
Normal suits almost everything. Maximum squeezes a little more but is slower. Fast is quickest. Store adds no compression — useful for photos and videos you just want to bundle.
Is there a size limit?
You can add up to 2 GB in total, but the real limit is your device's memory. Phones handle a few hundred MB comfortably; computers can do more.
Can I create a password-protected ZIP?
No. This tool makes standard, unencrypted ZIP files. For sensitive files, use a desktop archiver that supports AES encryption.
Can I zip files on my phone?
Yes. It works in Chrome, Safari and other modern browsers on Android and iPhone. Adding a whole folder depends on the browser's folder-picker support.
What happens if two files have the same name?
Files with the same path are renamed automatically, for example photo (2).jpg, so nothing is overwritten.
Will the ZIP open on Windows and Mac?
Yes. The ZIP uses the standard DEFLATE format that Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS open natively.
Are file dates kept?
Yes. Each file keeps its last-modified date inside the ZIP.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it.
