Quick Answer

Enter your monthly basic salary plus DA, your age and retirement age. You contribute 12% of basic+DA every month; your employer also pays 12%, of which up to ₹1,250 goes to the EPS pension fund and the rest to your EPF. At the 8.25% rate for FY 2025-26, a ₹30,000 basic salary rising 6% a year from age 28 to 58 could build an EPF balance of about ₹1.84 crore. Actual results depend on future rates and salary growth.

What is an EPF Calculator?

The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF, कर्मचारी भविष्य निधि) is the retirement savings scheme run by the EPFO for salaried employees in India. Every month a part of your salary and an equal amount from your employer go into your PF account, where it earns a fixed interest rate declared every year. Over a 25–35 year career, these small monthly contributions and the interest on them can grow into one of the largest sums most people ever receive.

An EPF calculator estimates that final amount. This free tool projects your balance month by month the way EPFO actually works: your 12% share, the employer's share after the pension (EPS) deduction, interest on the running monthly balance credited once a year, and a salary that rises every year. You also see how much came from you, how much from your employer and how much from interest — usually the biggest part.

Key Features

  • Retirement balance in rupees and lakh/crore.
  • Current rate — 8.25% for FY 2025-26, editable for other years.
  • Employee vs employer split, with the EPS pension share explained.
  • Salary growth — contributions rise with your yearly increment.
  • Existing balance and VPF for a complete picture.
  • Year-by-year table and a chart of contributions vs interest.
  • Private — salary details never leave your browser.

How to Use the EPF Calculator

  1. Enter your monthly basic salary plus dearness allowance — the figure on your payslip used for PF.
  2. Enter your current age and retirement age (58 is the usual EPF retirement age).
  3. Set your expected yearly salary increase — 5–8% is common.
  4. Keep the interest rate at 8.25% or change it to test other scenarios.
  5. Add your current EPF balance from your passbook and any VPF percentage.
  6. Read the balance at retirement, the split and the yearly table.

How EPF Contributions Are Split

Basic + DA (monthly)Your 12%Employer to EPSEmployer to EPFTotal into EPF
₹15,000₹1,800₹1,250₹550₹2,350
₹25,000₹3,000₹1,250₹1,750₹4,750
₹30,000₹3,600₹1,250₹2,350₹5,950
₹50,000₹6,000₹1,250₹4,750₹10,750

The employer's 12% is divided: 8.33% of wages up to the ₹15,000 ceiling goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), so at most ₹1,250 a month, and the rest goes to your EPF. (8.33% of ₹15,000 is ₹1,249.50, rounded to ₹1,250.) Some employers also pay EDLI insurance and administrative charges on top; those do not add to your balance.

How EPF Interest Is Calculated

EPFO calculates interest on your monthly running balance at one-twelfth of the annual rate, adds up the twelve months, and credits the total to your account at the end of the financial year. The credited interest then earns interest the next year. This calculator follows the same method:

  1. Each month, your and your employer's contributions are added to the balance.
  2. Interest for that month = balance × 8.25% ÷ 12.
  3. At the year end, the year's interest is added to the balance.
  4. Next year, salary (and contributions) rise by your increment percentage.

Example: a basic salary of ₹30,000 rising 6% a year from age 28 to 58 at 8.25% gives an EPF balance of about ₹1.84 crore. You would contribute about ₹34.2 lakh, your employer about ₹29.7 lakh into EPF, and interest would add about ₹1.2 crore — almost two-thirds of the total. That is the power of 30 years of compounding.

EPF Interest Rate History

Financial yearEPF interest rate
2025-268.25%
2024-258.25%
2023-248.25%
2022-238.15%
2021-228.10%
2020-218.50%

The rate is recommended by the EPFO's Central Board of Trustees and ratified by the Finance Ministry each year. Because it is reset annually, use the rate box to test a slightly lower or higher rate for long-term plans.

EPS: Your Pension, Separate from EPF

The EPS portion does not appear in your EPF balance, but it is not lost. If you complete 10 years of eligible service, EPS pays a monthly pension from age 58 based on your pensionable salary and service. With less than 10 years of service, you can withdraw the EPS amount using the scheme's withdrawal table when you leave. Untick the EPS box only if your employer genuinely puts the full 12% into EPF.

EPF vs PPF vs NPS

Most salaried people already have EPF through their employer, which makes it the foundation of retirement savings. PPF suits self-employed people or anyone wanting another tax-efficient, government-backed account, and NPS adds equity exposure for higher long-term growth with a pension at the end. Many families use all three: EPF and PPF for stability, NPS or mutual fund SIPs for growth. Try our PPF Calculator and NPS Calculator to compare the numbers side by side.

EPF and Tax

  • Contributions: your EPF and VPF contributions qualify for Section 80C deduction in the old tax regime (within the ₹1.5 lakh overall limit).
  • Interest: tax-free while your own yearly contribution is within ₹2.5 lakh (₹5 lakh if the employer doesn't contribute). Interest on the excess is taxable each year.
  • Withdrawal: tax-free after 5 years of continuous service. Withdrawing earlier can attract tax and TDS.
  • Employer contribution: combined employer contributions to EPF, NPS and superannuation above ₹7.5 lakh a year are taxable.

How to Check Your Real EPF Balance

  • EPFO member passbook: log in with your UAN and password on the EPFO passbook portal to see every monthly deposit and the interest credited.
  • UMANG app: search for EPFO in the government UMANG app and choose “View Passbook”.
  • Missed call: from your UAN-registered mobile, give a missed call to 9966044425 to get your last contribution and balance by SMS.
  • SMS: send “EPFOHO UAN ENG” to 7738299899 (replace ENG with HIN for Hindi).

Enter the balance you see there in the “Current EPF balance” box to make the projection start from your real number.

Tips to Grow Your EPF

  • Don't withdraw when you change jobs. Transfer your PF to the new employer using your UAN so compounding continues.
  • Use VPF wisely. It earns the same rate as EPF and is very safe, but keep total contributions within ₹2.5 lakh a year for tax-free interest.
  • Keep KYC updated. Link Aadhaar, PAN and bank account to your UAN to avoid claim rejections.
  • Check your passbook. Make sure your employer deposits contributions every month.
  • Combine with other investments. EPF is debt-like; pair it with equity investments such as SIPs for long-term growth.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using gross salary instead of basic + DA — PF is calculated only on basic and DA.
  • Counting EPS as EPF — EPS is a pension, not part of your withdrawable balance.
  • Assuming a fixed rate forever — the rate changes yearly.
  • Withdrawing early — it breaks compounding and may be taxed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is EPF calculated?

You contribute 12% of your basic salary plus DA every month. Your employer also contributes 12%, but 8.33% of wages up to ₹15,000 (at most ₹1,250 a month) goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme; the remaining employer amount goes to your EPF. Interest is worked out monthly on the balance and credited once a year.

What is the current EPF interest rate?

8.25% a year for FY 2025-26. The EPFO's Central Board of Trustees approved it in March 2026 and the government ratified it in June 2026. The rate was also 8.25% in 2023-24 and 2024-25.

Why is my employer's contribution less than mine in EPF?

Because part of the employer's 12% goes to EPS, the pension scheme. On a basic salary of ₹30,000, you put in ₹3,600 but the employer puts ₹2,351 into EPF and ₹1,250 into EPS.

What is EPS and do I get it back?

The Employees' Pension Scheme pays a monthly pension from age 58 if you complete at least 10 years of service. With less than 10 years you can withdraw the EPS amount as a lump sum using the scheme's withdrawal table. EPS is not part of your EPF balance.

Is EPF interest taxable?

EPF interest is tax-free as long as your own contribution (including VPF) stays within ₹2.5 lakh a year (₹5 lakh if your employer does not contribute). Interest on contributions above that limit is taxable.

What is VPF?

Voluntary Provident Fund lets you contribute more than 12% of basic+DA to your EPF. It earns the same 8.25% interest. The employer does not match VPF. Enter the extra percentage in the VPF box to see its effect.

When can I withdraw my EPF?

You can withdraw fully on retirement at 55 or later, or after two months of unemployment. Partial withdrawals are allowed for purposes such as medical needs, house purchase, marriage and education, subject to EPFO rules.

Does EPF interest compound?

Yes. Interest credited at the end of each year becomes part of your balance and earns interest the following year, which is why long careers build large balances.

What if my basic salary is above ₹15,000?

You and your employer still contribute 12% of your actual basic+DA unless your employer limits contributions to the ₹15,000 wage ceiling. The EPS share stays capped at ₹1,250 a month.

Is the result guaranteed?

No. It assumes the interest rate and salary increase you enter stay the same every year. EPFO declares the rate each year, so your actual balance will differ.

How do I check my actual EPF balance?

Use the EPFO member passbook portal with your UAN, the UMANG app, a missed call to 9966044425 or an SMS to 7738299899 from your registered mobile number.

Is this EPF calculator free?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, and your salary details stay in your browser.
