Quick Answer

To find hours worked, subtract the start time from the end time and take off any unpaid break. From 9:30 am to 6:15 pm is 8 hours 45 minutes; minus a 45-minute lunch break, that is 8 hours, or 8.00 decimal hours. For payroll, convert minutes to decimals by dividing by 60: 7 hours 45 minutes = 7.75 hours. Adding durations works the same way: 2:45:30 + 1:30:45 = 4 hours 16 minutes 15 seconds.

What is an Hours & Time Calculator?

An hours calculator (घंटे कैलकुलेटर) works out how much time passes between two clock times — for example, how many hours you worked today — and converts it into the decimal hours that timesheets and payroll use. It also adds and subtracts durations, so you can total a week of work, a set of video clips or your study sessions without fighting the 60-minute arithmetic that makes time sums error-prone.

This free tool has two modes. Hours between two times handles unpaid breaks, overnight shifts, hourly pay and weekly totals. Add / subtract time combines durations in hours, minutes and seconds, even beyond 24 hours.

Key Features

  • Hours between two times in h:mm and decimal.
  • Unpaid break deduction.
  • Overnight shifts handled automatically.
  • Pay at any hourly rate, per day and in total.
  • Multi-day totals for a regular week.
  • Add or subtract durations in h:mm:ss.

How to Use It

Hours between two times

  1. Enter the start and end time.
  2. Enter any unpaid break in minutes.
  3. Optionally enter an hourly rate and the number of days.
  4. Read the hours worked, decimal hours, minutes, multi-day total and pay.

Add / subtract time

  1. Type Time A and Time B as h:mm or h:mm:ss.
  2. Choose Add or Subtract.
  3. Read the result in hours, minutes and seconds, decimal hours and days.

How Work Hours are Calculated

Hours worked = End time − Start time − Unpaid break

Example: start 9:30 am, end 6:15 pm, 45-minute lunch.

  • 18:15 − 9:30 = 8 hours 45 minutes
  • 8 h 45 min − 45 min = 8 hours 00 minutes
  • Decimal: 8.00 hours — over 5 days, 40 hours
  • At ₹250 an hour: ₹2,000 a day, ₹10,000 for the week

Overnight shifts

If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift crosses midnight and the calculator adds 24 hours. A shift from 22:00 to 06:30 with a 30-minute break is 8 h 30 min − 30 min = 8 hours.

Minutes to Decimal Hours

MinutesDecimal hoursMinutesDecimal hours
50.08350.58
100.17400.67
150.25450.75
200.33500.83
250.42550.92
300.50601.00

The rule is simply minutes ÷ 60. So 7 hours 20 minutes = 7.33 hours, and 6 hours 50 minutes = 6.83 hours.

The Most Common Payroll Mistake

Writing 8 hours 30 minutes as "8.30" and multiplying by the hourly rate is a classic error. At ₹200 an hour, 8.30 × 200 = ₹1,660, but the correct figure is 8.5 × 200 = ₹1,700. Over a month of shifts, these small differences add up. Always use decimal hours for pay, which this calculator shows automatically.

Adding and Subtracting Time

Time arithmetic carries over at 60, not 10. The calculator converts everything to seconds, does the sum and converts back.

  • Add: 2:45:30 + 1:30:45 = 4 h 16 min 15 s (30 s + 45 s = 75 s = 1 min 15 s; 45 + 30 + 1 = 76 min = 1 h 16 min).
  • Subtract: 5:00:00 − 1:45:30 = 3 h 14 min 30 s.
  • More than a day: five shifts of 9:30 add up to 47 h 30 min, shown as 1 day 23 h 30 min.

You can also type plain decimal hours: "1.5" means 1 hour 30 minutes.

Building a Weekly Timesheet

If your hours are the same every day, use the days field in the first mode. If they vary, calculate each day in the first mode, then add the daily results together in Add mode. For example: Monday 8:15, Tuesday 7:50, Wednesday 9:05, Thursday 8:00, Friday 6:40. Add them two at a time (or in sequence) to get 39 h 50 min, which is 39.83 decimal hours.

Example: Freelancer Billing

A freelance designer charges ₹1,200 an hour and works on a client project in three sessions: 1 h 40 min, 2 h 15 min and 50 min. In Add mode, 1:40 + 2:15 = 3:55, then 3:55 + 0:50 = 4 h 45 min, which is 4.75 decimal hours. The invoice is 4.75 × ₹1,200 = ₹5,700. Billing "4.45 hours" by mistake would have cost the designer ₹360.

12-Hour and 24-Hour Time

The time boxes follow your device's clock format, but it helps to know the conversion. In 24-hour time, add 12 to any afternoon or evening hour: 1:00 pm is 13:00, 6:15 pm is 18:15 and 11:30 pm is 23:30. Midnight is 00:00 and noon is 12:00. Night-shift workers often find 24-hour time clearer because it avoids am/pm mix-ups.

Rounding Time for Payroll

Some employers round clock-in and clock-out times to the nearest 5, 6, 10 or 15 minutes. With quarter-hour rounding, for example, 8 h 07 min usually becomes 8 h 00 min and 8 h 08 min becomes 8 h 15 min. Rounding should be applied the same way in both directions so that it evens out over time. Check your organisation's policy, calculate exact hours here and then apply the rule.

Working Hours and Overtime

In many jobs a standard working day is 8 or 9 hours and a week is 40–48 hours, with overtime paid at a higher rate beyond that. Exact limits, rest intervals and overtime rates depend on the law that covers your work, your state and your employment contract, and they have been updated under India's newer labour codes. Check your offer letter, HR policy or the applicable rules. The calculator gives you accurate hours; your policy decides how they are paid.

Other Everyday Uses

  • Students: total weekly study hours or the length of an exam schedule.
  • Freelancers: bill clients accurately in decimal hours.
  • Creators: add up clip lengths for a video edit.
  • Travellers: work out journey times (use our Time Zone Converter across time zones).
  • Fitness: total training time across sessions.

Example: A Student's Study Week

A student preparing for exams logs study sessions every day: 2:30, 3:15, 1:45, 4:00, 2:50, 5:10 and 3:30. Adding them in sequence gives 23 h 00 min for the week, or about 3 h 17 min a day on average. Seeing the real total makes it easy to compare weeks, spot slow days and plan revision time realistically before an exam date.

Why Time Maths Is Tricky

We count most things in tens, but time uses a mix of bases: 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day. A normal calculator treats 1.45 + 1.30 as 2.75, when 1 h 45 min + 1 h 30 min is really 3 h 15 min. Converting everything to a single unit first — seconds or decimal hours — removes the confusion, and that is exactly what this calculator does behind the scenes.

Tips

  • Record start and end times as you go rather than estimating later.
  • Know which breaks are unpaid.
  • Round consistently — some employers round to the nearest 5 or 15 minutes.
  • Keep your own timesheet to check against payroll.

Common Mistakes

  • Multiplying h:mm by the rate instead of decimal hours.
  • Forgetting the break.
  • Getting a negative result for night shifts on a basic calculator.
  • Mixing 12-hour and 24-hour times — 6:15 pm is 18:15.

Quick Glossary

  • Decimal hours: hours written as a decimal, e.g. 7.75 for 7 h 45 min.
  • Unpaid break: time deducted from the hours you are paid for.
  • Overnight shift: a shift that starts one day and ends the next.
  • Timesheet: a record of hours worked, usually per day or week.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate hours between two times?

Subtract the start time from the end time. From 9:30 to 18:15: 18:15 − 9:30 = 8 hours 45 minutes. Then subtract any unpaid break.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes = 0.75 hours, 20 minutes = 0.33 hours, 50 minutes = 0.83 hours. So 7 h 45 min = 7.75 hours.

How do I calculate a night shift that crosses midnight?

Enter the start and end times as normal. If the end time is earlier than the start, the calculator adds 24 hours. From 22:00 to 06:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes.

How do I calculate pay from hours?

Multiply decimal hours by the hourly rate. 8.5 hours at ₹200 an hour = ₹1,700. Using h:mm directly (8.30) would give the wrong answer.

Why is 8 hours 30 minutes not 8.30 hours?

Because an hour has 60 minutes, not 100. 30 minutes is half an hour, so 8 h 30 min = 8.5 decimal hours.

Can I add more than 24 hours?

Yes. In Add / subtract mode, hours can go beyond 24 — useful for adding up a week of timesheet entries, study hours or video lengths. The result is also shown in days.

How do I subtract time?

Choose Add / subtract, enter both durations and pick Subtract. 5:00:00 − 1:45:30 = 3 h 14 min 30 s. If B is larger than A, the result is shown as negative.

What format should I type durations in?

h:mm (like 2:45) or h:mm:ss (like 2:45:30). You can also type decimal hours like 1.5.

How many working hours are in a week?

At 8 hours a day for 5 days, 40 hours; at 9 hours for 6 days, 54 hours. Legal limits on daily and weekly hours and overtime depend on the law and your sector — check the rules that apply to you.

Does the calculator include paid breaks?

Only enter unpaid breaks in the break box. If your breaks are paid, leave it at 0.

Can I use it for a weekly timesheet?

Yes. Use the days field for a regular schedule, or add each day's hours in Add mode for an irregular week.

Is the hours calculator free?

Yes, free and private. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
