Quick Answer

Prepaying a loan cuts the principal, so all future interest falls. Example: a ₹30 lakh home loan at 8.5% for 20 years has an EMI of ₹26,035 and total interest of about ₹32.5 lakh. Paying ₹3 lakh extra after the first year and keeping the same EMI saves ₹9,62,214 of interest and closes the loan in 16 years instead of 20. Using the same ₹3 lakh to lower the EMI instead (to ₹23,378) saves only ₹3,05,645.

What is a Loan Prepayment Calculator?

A loan prepayment calculator (लोन प्रीपेमेंट कैलकुलेटर) shows how much interest you save by paying more than your EMI. Whether you received a bonus, sold an asset or simply have spare cash each month, putting it towards your home, car or personal loan reduces the principal — and because interest is charged on the outstanding principal, every later month's interest falls too.

This free tool simulates your loan month by month. You can add a one-time part-payment after any month, a fixed extra amount every month, or both, and choose whether to keep the EMI (and close the loan sooner) or keep the tenure (and pay a lower EMI). It shows the interest without and with prepayment, the interest saved and the new closing date or EMI.

Key Features

  • Interest saved in rupees and lakh.
  • One-time part-payment after any month you choose.
  • Extra amount every month on top of the EMI.
  • Two options: keep EMI and shorten tenure, or keep tenure and lower EMI.
  • Loan closing time and how much earlier it closes.
  • New EMI when you choose the lower-EMI option.

How to Use It

  1. Enter the outstanding loan amount, the interest rate and the remaining tenure in years.
  2. Enter a one-time prepayment and the month after which you will pay it.
  3. Optionally enter an extra amount every month.
  4. Choose keep EMI, shorten tenure or keep tenure, lower EMI.
  5. Read the interest saved and the new closing time or EMI.

How the Calculation Works

The EMI comes from the standard formula EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ [(1 + r)n − 1], where r is the monthly rate and n the number of months. Each month the calculator charges interest = balance × annual rate ÷ 12, deducts the EMI plus any extra, and after the chosen month deducts the one-time prepayment. In lower-EMI mode it recalculates the EMI on the reduced balance over the months left. It runs this twice — with and without prepayment — and the difference in total interest is your saving.

Worked Example: ₹30 Lakh Home Loan

Loan ₹30,00,000 at 8.5% for 20 years. EMI: ₹26,035. Total interest without prepayment: about ₹32,48,327.

StrategyTotal interestInterest savedResult
No prepayment₹32,48,327—20 years
₹3 lakh after month 12, keep EMI₹22,86,113₹9,62,214Closes in 16 years
₹3 lakh after month 12, lower EMI₹29,42,682₹3,05,645EMI ₹23,378, 20 years
₹5,000 extra every month₹20,75,271₹11,73,056Closes in 13 y 8 m
₹3 lakh + ₹5,000 a month₹15,75,312₹16,73,015Closes in 11 y 6 m

The same ₹3 lakh saves three times as much interest when you keep the EMI. And a steady ₹5,000 a month — less than a fifth of the EMI — cuts more than six years off the loan.

Reduce EMI or Reduce Tenure?

Keep EMI, shorten tenureKeep tenure, lower EMI
Interest savedMuch higherLower
Monthly outgoSameLower
Debt-freeSoonerSame date
Best forStable income, goal of becoming debt-freeTight budget or uncertain income

Shortening the tenure wins on savings because the loan stops earning interest for the lender years earlier. Lowering the EMI makes sense if your budget is stretched — for example after a job change — and gives you the flexibility to prepay again later.

Why Timing Matters

In the early years of a long loan, most of each EMI goes to interest. On the example loan, the first EMI of ₹26,035 includes about ₹21,250 of interest and only about ₹4,785 of principal. A prepayment early on removes principal that would otherwise attract interest for many years.

Compare: ₹3 lakh prepaid after month 12 saves ₹9,62,214. The same ₹3 lakh prepaid after month 120 saves about ₹3,42,829 and closes the loan in 18 years. Both are worthwhile, but earlier is far better.

The "One Extra EMI a Year" Habit

A popular habit is paying one extra EMI every year, perhaps from a bonus. Spread across the year, that is about ₹2,170 extra each month on the example loan. It saves about ₹6.5 lakh of interest and closes the loan in 16 years 7 months instead of 20. Adding a 5% step-up to your EMI as your salary grows works even better.

Prepayment Charges: What the Rules Say

The Reserve Bank of India does not allow banks and housing finance companies to charge prepayment or foreclosure penalties on floating-rate term loans taken by individuals for non-business purposes. Most home loans fall in this group. Fixed-rate loans, many car loans and personal loans can carry a foreclosure charge of a few percent of the amount prepaid, and some lenders allow part-payments only a few times a year or above a minimum amount. Always check your sanction letter and loan agreement.

Prepayment and Income Tax

In the old tax regime, interest on a home loan for a self-occupied house is deductible up to ₹2 lakh a year under Section 24(b), and principal repayment counts towards the ₹1.5 lakh limit of Section 80C. Prepaying reduces your interest, which may reduce the deduction. But a tax deduction only returns a part of the interest — at most 31.2% with cess at the highest slab — while prepayment removes the interest entirely. In most cases the interest saved far exceeds the tax benefit lost. Compare regimes with our Income Tax Calculator.

Prepay or Invest?

Prepaying a loan at 8.5% earns a guaranteed, risk-free, tax-free 8.5%. An equity SIP might earn more over the long run, but with no guarantee. A balanced approach used by many borrowers: keep 6 months of expenses as an emergency fund, prepay high-interest loans (personal loans, credit cards) first, and split spare cash between home-loan prepayment and investing. Our SIP Calculator helps you compare.

Car and Personal Loans

An ₹8 lakh car loan at 9% for 5 years has an EMI of ₹16,607 and total interest of about ₹1,96,401. Prepaying ₹1 lakh after the first year saves about ₹39,209 and closes the loan 8 months early — before any foreclosure charge. Short loans offer smaller savings, so check whether the charge eats into the benefit.

Tips Before You Prepay

  • Keep an emergency fund — money paid into a loan is hard to get back.
  • Clear costly debt first — credit cards and personal loans before a home loan.
  • Tell your lender in writing whether to reduce EMI or tenure.
  • Get an updated repayment schedule and check the new balance.
  • Consider a balance transfer if your rate is well above current market rates.
  • Keep receipts of every part-payment and check that it was applied to principal, not to future EMIs.
  • Re-run the numbers whenever your floating rate changes, since a rate hike can quietly stretch your tenure.

Why Use This Loan Prepayment Calculator?

Banks show your EMI, but rarely the true value of a part-payment. This calculator does the full month-by-month amortisation for both scenarios, shows the exact interest saved and lets you compare the reduce-EMI and reduce-tenure options side by side. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs entirely in your browser. For a new loan, start with our EMI Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is loan prepayment?

Paying more than your EMI — either a lump sum (part-payment) or an extra amount every month. The extra money goes straight to the principal, so the interest charged in every later month falls.

Should I reduce EMI or tenure after prepayment?

Reducing the tenure (keeping the EMI) saves far more interest. In our example, ₹3 lakh prepaid on a ₹30 lakh, 20-year loan saves ₹9.62 lakh by shortening the tenure but only ₹3.06 lakh by lowering the EMI. Choose a lower EMI only if you need the monthly cash flow.

How much interest will I save by prepaying ₹1 lakh?

It depends on the rate, the remaining tenure and when you pay. The earlier in the loan, the bigger the saving, because more interest is still ahead. Enter your own figures in the calculator for an exact answer.

Is there a penalty for prepaying a home loan?

RBI rules do not allow banks and housing finance companies to charge prepayment or foreclosure penalties on floating-rate loans taken by individuals for non-business purposes. Fixed-rate loans and some business loans may carry a charge, so check your loan agreement.

When is the best time to prepay?

As early as possible. In the first years of a long loan most of each EMI is interest, so a prepayment then removes the most future interest. The same ₹3 lakh paid after month 120 instead of month 12 saves about ₹3.4 lakh instead of ₹9.6 lakh.

Is it better to prepay or invest?

Prepaying gives a guaranteed, tax-free return equal to your loan rate. Investing may earn more but with risk. Many people compare the loan rate with expected post-tax returns and keep an emergency fund before prepaying.

Does prepayment affect my tax benefit?

In the old tax regime, home loan interest on a self-occupied house is deductible up to ₹2 lakh a year under Section 24(b), and principal under Section 80C. Prepaying reduces interest and may reduce the deduction, but the interest saved is usually larger than the tax benefit lost.

What does paying one extra EMI a year do?

It is roughly like paying one-twelfth of an EMI extra every month. On the example loan, about ₹2,170 extra a month saves about ₹6.5 lakh of interest and closes the loan in 16 years 7 months.

Can I prepay a car loan or personal loan?

Usually yes, but these are often fixed-rate and may carry a foreclosure charge of a few percent. An ₹8 lakh car loan at 9% for 5 years, with ₹1 lakh prepaid after a year, saves about ₹39,000 of interest and closes 8 months early.

How does the calculator work?

It amortises the loan month by month: interest = balance × rate ÷ 12, EMI (plus any extra) is paid, and the one-time prepayment is deducted after the chosen month. In lower-EMI mode the EMI is recomputed on the reduced balance for the remaining months.

Will the bank reduce my EMI automatically?

Not always. Many lenders reduce the tenure by default after a part-payment. Tell your lender in writing which option you want.

Is the loan prepayment calculator free?

Yes, completely free and private. Calculations run in your browser.
