Quick Answer
Fill in your business and GSTIN, the customer and place of supply, then add items with HSN/SAC, quantity, rate and GST %. The tool applies CGST + SGST when your state matches the place of supply and IGST otherwise, totals everything, writes the amount in words and lets you print or save the invoice as PDF. Example: ₹45,000 of goods and services at 18% within Bihar = ₹4,050 CGST + ₹4,050 SGST = ₹53,100.
Free GST Invoice Generator for Indian Businesses
Every GST-registered business has to issue a proper tax invoice for taxable supplies — and getting the details right matters. A missing GSTIN, the wrong tax split between CGST, SGST and IGST, or an incorrect place of supply can create problems when your customer claims input tax credit, or when your returns are matched. Billing software is useful, but many freelancers, shopkeepers, small traders and new businesses issue only a handful of invoices a month and don't want another subscription. This free GST invoice generator gives you a clean, complete tax invoice in a few minutes, ready to print or save as PDF.
It validates GSTINs, including the check digit, so typing mistakes are caught before the invoice goes out. It decides automatically whether to charge CGST and SGST or IGST from your state and the place of supply. It supports the current GST rate structure, calculates line-by-line and total tax, offers rounding to the nearest rupee, and writes the grand total in words in the Indian lakh-crore style. Your draft is saved only in your own browser, so nothing about your business or customers is uploaded.
How to Create a GST Invoice
- Your business details. Enter your business name, GSTIN and address. When the GSTIN is valid, your state is filled in from its first two digits.
- Customer details. Enter the buyer's name and address. Add their GSTIN if they are registered (a B2B sale) — it is checked too. Leave it empty for consumers (B2C).
- Place of supply. Choose the state where the supply is made. For goods this is usually where they are delivered; for many services it is the recipient's location.
- Invoice details. Set the invoice number, date, whether reverse charge applies, and whether to round off the total.
- Items. For each line, enter the description, HSN (goods) or SAC (services) code, quantity, unit, rate before tax and GST rate. Use Add Item for more lines and the × button to remove one.
- Notes. Add bank details, UPI ID, payment terms or a thank-you line.
- Print / Save as PDF. Check the preview and print it, or choose "Save as PDF" to email it.
CGST + SGST or IGST? How the Tool Decides
GST is split differently depending on whether a supply stays within one state or crosses state lines:
- Intra-state supply — the supplier's state and the place of supply are the same. The GST rate is split equally: half as Central GST (CGST) and half as State GST (SGST, or UTGST in some union territories). An 18% item attracts 9% CGST and 9% SGST.
- Inter-state supply — they are different. The full rate is charged as Integrated GST (IGST): 18% IGST.
The generator compares your state with the place of supply and applies the right columns automatically. Charging the wrong type of tax is a common and annoying mistake: the tax paid under the wrong head generally has to be corrected and paid under the right one, so it is worth getting right on the invoice itself.
Worked Example
A trader in Patna sells two 43-inch LED televisions at ₹22,000 each to a customer in Gaya, and charges ₹500 per TV for installation:
| Item | Taxable value | GST | CGST | SGST | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LED TV × 2 (HSN 8528) | ₹44,000 | 18% | ₹3,960 | ₹3,960 | ₹51,920 |
| Installation × 2 (SAC 9987) | ₹1,000 | 18% | ₹90 | ₹90 | ₹1,180 |
| Total | ₹45,000 | ₹4,050 | ₹4,050 | ₹53,100 |
Both towns are in Bihar, so the supply is intra-state and CGST + SGST apply. If the same customer were in Kolkata, the place of supply would be West Bengal, and the invoice would show ₹8,100 IGST instead, with the same ₹53,100 total. The amount in words would read "Rupees Fifty Three Thousand One Hundred Only".
What a GST Tax Invoice Must Include
The GST invoice rules list the particulars a tax invoice must contain. The generator includes fields for all the common ones:
- Name, address and GSTIN of the supplier
- A consecutive serial number, unique for the financial year, of up to 16 characters (letters, numbers, hyphens or slashes)
- Date of issue
- Name, address and GSTIN of the recipient if registered
- HSN code for goods or SAC for services
- Description, quantity and unit of goods or services
- Total value and taxable value after any discount
- Rate and amount of tax — CGST, SGST/UTGST or IGST
- Place of supply, with the state name, for inter-state supplies
- Whether tax is payable on reverse charge
- Signature or digital signature of the supplier or an authorised person
For unregistered B2C buyers with high-value supplies, the delivery address may also be required. When in doubt about a particular case, ask your CA.
GST Rates After GST 2.0
From 22 September 2025, GST moved to a simpler structure with two main slabs, 5% and 18%, a special 40% rate for specified luxury and sin goods, and nil-rated items at 0%. Special rates such as 3% for gold and jewellery and 0.25% for rough diamonds and some precious stones continue. The rate selector offers 0%, 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 18% and 40%, plus a custom option for any other rate. Rates are decided by HSN or SAC code, and some items moved between slabs in the reform, so check the latest CBIC rate notifications or ask your CA before invoicing a new product. To check a single price with or without GST, use our GST calculator.
GSTIN Validation Explained
A GSTIN has 15 characters: a two-digit state code, the business's 10-character PAN, an entity number, the letter Z by default, and a final check character. The check character is calculated from the first fourteen using a published algorithm, so most single typing mistakes — a wrong digit, two swapped characters — make the GSTIN fail. The generator recalculates it and tells you if it doesn't match, and shows the state the code belongs to. A valid format does not prove the GSTIN is active or belongs to the named business; for that, use the taxpayer search on the official GST portal.
HSN and SAC Codes
HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) codes classify goods; SAC (Services Accounting Codes) classify services. Businesses with aggregate annual turnover up to ₹5 crore generally have to show 4-digit HSN codes on B2B invoices, and those above ₹5 crore 6-digit codes. Showing the right code helps your customer and makes your GSTR-1 reporting easier.
What This Tool Does Not Do
- E-invoicing. Businesses whose aggregate turnover exceeds the e-invoicing threshold (currently ₹5 crore) must report B2B invoices to the Invoice Registration Portal and print the IRN and QR code they receive. This generator does not connect to the IRP.
- E-way bills. Moving goods above the prescribed value usually needs an e-way bill from the government portal.
- Filing returns. Invoices still have to be reported in your GST returns.
For most small businesses below the threshold, a correctly prepared invoice like this one is all that is needed.
Tips for Smooth GST Invoicing
- Keep one continuous invoice series per financial year, such as INV-2026-001, INV-2026-002, and never reuse a number.
- Save a PDF of every invoice and back it up; GST records generally have to be kept for several years.
- Add your bank details or a UPI QR code so customers can pay quickly — our UPI QR generator makes one for free.
- Double-check the customer's GSTIN before issuing a B2B invoice, since their input tax credit depends on it.
- If you give a discount, enter the rate after the discount so the taxable value is correct; discounts shown on the invoice at the time of sale reduce the value on which GST is charged.
- If an invoice has a mistake after it is issued, don't edit and reissue the same number — issue a credit note or debit note, as your CA advises.
- Your draft is remembered in this browser. On a shared computer, use Clear Saved Draft when you are done.

Frequently Asked Questions
What must a GST tax invoice contain?
Supplier's name, address and GSTIN; a unique serial invoice number (up to 16 characters); date; recipient's name, address and GSTIN if registered; place of supply; HSN/SAC; description, quantity, value and taxable value; GST rate and CGST/SGST or IGST amounts; reverse-charge status; and a signature.
When do I charge CGST + SGST and when IGST?
If the supplier's state and the place of supply are the same, it's an intra-state supply: split the GST equally into CGST and SGST. If they differ, it's inter-state: charge IGST. The generator decides this from the two states you choose.
What are the current GST rates?
Since 22 September 2025 the main slabs are 0% (nil), 5%, 18% and 40% (for specified luxury and sin goods), with special rates like 0.25% and 3% for some items. Always confirm the rate for your HSN code.
How many HSN digits do I need?
Businesses with aggregate turnover up to ₹5 crore generally need 4-digit HSN codes on B2B invoices; above ₹5 crore, 6 digits. Services use SAC codes.
Does it check my GSTIN?
Yes. It checks the 15-character format, verifies the final check character using the official algorithm, and reads the state from the first two digits. It can't confirm the GSTIN is active — use the GST portal's search for that.
Does this create an e-invoice with IRN and QR code?
No. Businesses above the e-invoicing turnover threshold must register B2B invoices on the Invoice Registration Portal to get an IRN and QR code. Use this for regular invoices or as a draft.
Can unregistered businesses use it?
An unregistered person can't issue a tax invoice or charge GST. They can issue a bill of supply or simple invoice without tax — set the GST rate to 0% and leave GSTIN blank, and check the wording with your CA.
What is reverse charge?
Under reverse charge, the recipient pays GST to the government instead of the supplier, for specified goods and services. The invoice must say whether reverse charge applies.
Is my invoice data uploaded?
No. Everything is created in your browser. The draft is saved in this browser's local storage so you can continue later; use Clear Saved Draft to remove it.
How do I save the invoice as PDF?
Click Print / Save as PDF and choose 'Save as PDF' as the printer. Only the invoice is printed, on A4.
Can I add my logo?
Not in this version. The invoice uses a clean text layout with your business name at the top, which is accepted for GST purposes.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on invoices.
