Quick Answer

A UPI QR code contains a payment link in the format upi://pay?pa=yourid@bank&pn=Your%20Name&cu=INR. When a customer scans it with any UPI app — such as BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm — the app opens a payment to your UPI ID. Add &am=250.00 to fix the amount, or leave it out so the payer types it. This tool builds the link, draws the QR and makes a printable Scan & Pay card.

What is a UPI QR Code Generator?

A UPI QR code generator (UPI QR कोड जनरेटर) turns your UPI ID into a QR code that customers can scan with any UPI app to pay you. UPI — the Unified Payments Interface run by NPCI — has made scan-and-pay the most common way to pay in India, from vegetable stalls to large shops. With your own QR you can accept payments at a counter, on a website, on an invoice, at an event or from friends, without a card machine.

This free tool builds the standard UPI payment link, draws it as a QR code and places it on a clean, printable "Scan & Pay with any UPI app" card with your name, UPI ID and, if you like, a fixed amount. It all happens in your browser.

Key Features

  • Standard UPI link that UPI apps are built to read.
  • Optional fixed amount and payment note.
  • Printable card with name, UPI ID and amount.
  • QR-only PNG for invoices, menus and websites.
  • UPI ID format check to catch typos.
  • Hindi and emoji names supported.

How to Use It

  1. Enter your UPI ID (also called VPA), such as yourname@okbank.
  2. Enter the name customers should see.
  3. Optionally enter an amount (for a specific bill) and a note (like an order number).
  4. Scan the QR with your own UPI app to confirm it opens a payment to the right person.
  5. Download the card or QR, or print it.

What's Inside a UPI QR Code

The QR contains a UPI payment link like this:

upi://pay?pa=sharmastore@upi&pn=Sharma%20General%20Store&cu=INR
ParameterMeaningRequired?
paPayee address — your UPI IDYes
pnPayee nameYes
amAmount, e.g. 250.00Optional
cuCurrency — INRYes
tnTransaction noteOptional

When a customer scans the code, their app reads these values and opens a payment screen. They check the name, enter or confirm the amount and approve it with their own UPI PIN. Money goes straight from their bank to yours — this tool never touches it.

Fixed-Amount vs Open QR

Open QR (no amount)Fixed-amount QR
Best forShop counters, tips, donationsInvoices, event tickets, fees
PayerTypes the amountSees the amount pre-filled
ReuseUse every dayOne price or one bill

For a shop, one laminated open QR at the counter works for every customer. For a ₹499 workshop fee or an invoice, a fixed-amount QR reduces mistakes.

Printing Your QR Card

  • Test first: scan the card on screen with two different UPI apps.
  • Size: print the card so the QR is at least 5–6 cm wide for counters; bigger for walls.
  • Protect it: laminate or put it in a plastic stand so it lasts and stays flat.
  • Placement: at eye level, well lit, where customers can scan without leaning over.
  • Check regularly that nobody has pasted another QR sticker over yours — a known scam.

UPI Safety Tips

  • You never need to scan a QR or enter your PIN to receive money. Anyone asking you to do so to "receive a refund" is likely a scammer.
  • Never share your UPI PIN or OTP, even with someone claiming to be from a bank or UPI app.
  • Payers should check the name shown in their app before paying.
  • Confirm payments in your bank or app notifications — don't rely only on a customer's screenshot, which can be faked.
  • Use a separate account for business receipts if you can; it makes bookkeeping easier.

Who Uses UPI QR Codes?

  • Shops, cafés and street vendors — counter QR codes.
  • Freelancers and tutors — QR on invoices and WhatsApp.
  • Home businesses — QR in Instagram posts and on parcels.
  • Events and societies — tickets, donations and maintenance fees.
  • Friends and family — splitting bills and collecting money for trips.

Pair your QR with a WhatsApp link so customers can order and pay in one conversation.

Example: A Housing Society Collecting Maintenance

A society treasurer needs ₹2,500 from each flat every month. She creates a QR with the society's UPI ID, the name "Green Park Residents Welfare", the amount 2500 and the note "Maintenance". She shares the card PNG in the residents' WhatsApp group and pins a printed copy on the notice board. Residents scan, see the correct amount and name pre-filled, and pay in seconds. Because the amount is fixed, fewer people pay the wrong sum, and the note makes the entries easy to spot in the bank statement. For flats with arrears, she simply makes a second QR with the higher amount.

If a Payment Fails or Shows Pending

  • Wait a few minutes and check the bank statement — most delays clear quickly.
  • Ask the payer for the UPI transaction ID (UTR) from their app.
  • Don't ask them to pay again until you have checked; failed debits are normally reversed automatically by the bank within the period set by RBI rules.
  • Raise a complaint in the UPI app or with the bank if money was debited but not received.

Sharing the QR Online

You don't have to print anything. Send the card image on WhatsApp, add it to your Instagram highlights, put the QR-only image on your website's contact page or attach it to an email invoice. On a phone, the payer can save the image and open it from their UPI app's "scan from gallery" option. Some apps can also open the copied upi:// link directly.

Personal QR vs Merchant QR

This tool creates a QR for any UPI ID, which is ideal for individuals and small sellers. Banks and payment providers also offer merchant QR codes with features such as settlement reports, payment sound boxes, invoices and dashboards. If you run a busy shop or need formal records, ask your bank about a merchant account. For occasional use, a personal QR like this is enough.

Using the QR on Invoices

Add the QR-only PNG to your invoice template with the exact amount and the invoice number as the note. Customers scan, see the amount pre-filled and pay in seconds. Use our GST Calculator to work out the total and the Rupees in Words converter for the amount in words.

Keeping Simple Records

Even small sellers benefit from a basic record of UPI receipts. Download your bank or UPI app statement every month, match each payment with the order or invoice, and note the transaction ID. A simple spreadsheet with date, customer, amount and UTR makes it easy to answer "did you receive my payment?" questions and helps at tax time. Using the note field with an order number makes matching much quicker.

Common Mistakes

  • Typo in the UPI ID — payments fail or, worse, go to someone else. Always test.
  • Fixed amount on a counter QR, forcing every customer to pay the same.
  • Printing too small or on glossy paper that reflects light.
  • Trusting payment screenshots instead of bank notifications.
  • Old QR codes in circulation after changing your bank or UPI ID — replace every printed copy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I create a UPI QR code for free?

Enter your UPI ID and name above. The tool instantly creates a QR code that any UPI app can scan to pay you, and a printable Scan & Pay card. There is no fee and no sign-up.

Where do I find my UPI ID?

Open your UPI app (such as BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or your bank's app) and look in your profile or bank account section. It looks like name@bankhandle.

Can I add a fixed amount to the QR?

Yes. Enter an amount and it is added to the QR, so the payer's app shows it pre-filled. Leave it empty for a general QR where the payer types the amount — best for a shop counter.

Does the QR work with Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm?

It uses the standard UPI payment link, which UPI apps are designed to read. Always test by scanning it with a couple of apps before printing.

Does the QR code expire?

No. It is a static QR containing your UPI ID. It works as long as that UPI ID is active.

Is it safe to share my UPI ID?

Your UPI ID only lets people send money to you — it cannot be used to take money. Never share your UPI PIN, OTP or card details. Remember: you never need to scan a QR or enter a PIN to receive money.

Will I get payment notifications?

Notifications come from your bank or UPI app, not from this tool. For a shop, consider a sound box or app alerts from your bank or payment provider.

Can I use this for my business?

Yes, for accepting payments into your UPI ID. Businesses that need features such as settlement reports or invoices can also get a merchant QR from their bank or payment provider.

Why does the payer see a different name?

UPI apps usually show the name registered with the bank account behind the UPI ID, which may differ from the name you typed. Payers should always check the name in their app before paying.

What is the note field?

An optional message (tn) shown in the payer's app, such as an invoice or order number. Some apps may not display it.

Is my UPI ID sent to your server?

No. The QR is created in your browser. The QR drawing library is downloaded from a public CDN; your details are not sent anywhere.

Is there a limit on the amount?

UPI apps and banks set transaction limits — commonly ₹1,00,000 per payment for most transactions, with higher limits for some categories. The QR itself does not set a limit.
