Rates are daily mid-market reference rates from free public data (fawazahmed0 Exchange API via jsDelivr, with the European Central Bank's Frankfurter service as a backup). Your browser downloads them directly, so those services see your IP address. Banks, cards and money changers add a margin — check their rate before you pay.

Quick Answer

Enter an amount, choose the currency you have and the currency you want, and the converted amount appears instantly using the latest daily mid-market reference rate, with the rate date and source shown underneath. This is the 'real' rate between the two currencies; banks, cards, money changers and remittance apps usually give you a slightly worse rate plus fees, so use the result as a benchmark to compare their offers.

What Is a Currency Converter?

A currency converter (करेंसी कन्वर्टर) tells you how much one currency is worth in another. Whether you are checking how many rupees your salary in dirhams is worth, budgeting for a trip to Dubai, Singapore or Europe, pricing a product for foreign buyers, paying for an online course in dollars or receiving money from family abroad, the first question is always the same: what is today's rate?

This free converter covers 30 currencies — the Indian rupee, US dollar, euro, British pound, all six Gulf currencies, the major Asian currencies and India's neighbours — using free daily reference rates. It shows the converted amount, the rate in both directions, the date and source of the rate, and a quick table of your amount in other popular currencies.

How to Use It

  1. Type the amount you want to convert.
  2. Pick the From currency (what you have) and the To currency (what you want).
  3. Read the result instantly, with "1 USD = … INR" and the reverse rate below it.
  4. Press swap to reverse the direction, or Copy result to paste it elsewhere.
  5. Share the link — the page address keeps your amount and currencies.

Reading the Quick Table

Below the main result, a quick table shows your amount in up to ten popular currencies at once — the US dollar, euro, pound, dirham, riyal, Singapore and Australian dollars, Canadian dollar, yen and rupee (skipping the currency you are converting from). It is handy when you are comparing prices across countries, deciding where a course or gadget is cheapest, or explaining to family how much a salary offer abroad is worth back home.

Mid-Market Rate vs the Rate You Actually Get

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the price at which large banks buy and sell a currency on global markets. It is the fairest benchmark, and it is what this converter shows. However, almost nobody can transact at exactly this rate:

  • Banks buy foreign currency from you slightly below and sell it slightly above the mid-market rate. Their "card rate" or "TT rate" includes this margin.
  • Debit and credit cards used abroad or on foreign websites usually add a foreign currency markup on top of the network rate, plus GST on that markup.
  • Airport and hotel money changers often have the widest margins of all.
  • Remittance apps may advertise "zero fee" but build their earnings into a weaker exchange rate.

The practical rule: compare the total amount you will receive (or pay) with the mid-market result here. The gap is the real cost of the conversion — fees plus margin together.

Worked Example: Comparing Two Offers

Suppose you want to send 1,000 US dollars home and the mid-market rate on the day shows, for illustration, 1 USD = ₹84.00, so 1,000 USD = ₹84,000.

  • Offer A: rate ₹83.20, fee $5. You convert $995 × 83.20 = ₹82,784.
  • Offer B: rate ₹82.60, no fee. You convert $1,000 × 82.60 = ₹82,600.

Offer A, despite charging a fee, delivers ₹184 more. Against the mid-market ₹84,000, Offer A costs you ₹1,216 (about 1.4%) and Offer B ₹1,400 (about 1.7%). The example rates are illustrative — check today's actual rate above — but the method works every time. Our Percentage Calculator helps you turn such gaps into percentages.

Tips for Travel Abroad

  • Pay in the local currency when a card machine or website offers to charge you in rupees. This "dynamic currency conversion" usually uses a poorer rate.
  • Use a forex card or a zero-markup card if you travel often; compare their rate with the mid-market rate.
  • Avoid exchanging large amounts at the airport; carry a little cash and get the rest in the city or withdraw from ATMs.
  • Know your budget in rupees — convert hotel and meal prices here before you book.
  • Keep receipts for currency purchases; you may need them to reconvert leftover cash.

Tips for NRIs Sending Money to India

  • Compare the rupees received, not just the advertised fee.
  • Check transfer speed and limits; the cheapest option is not always the fastest.
  • Use the right account type — NRE and NRO accounts have different tax and repatriation rules; confirm with your bank.
  • Avoid unofficial channels; they are illegal under Indian foreign exchange rules and offer no protection.
  • Watch the rate over a few days for large transfers, but don't try to time the market precisely — daily moves are usually small.

GST and Charges on Currency Conversion in India

In India, GST applies to currency exchange services provided by banks and authorised dealers. It is not charged on the full amount you convert; instead, the taxable value is worked out using slabs set by the rules, and GST is applied to that value. Card foreign currency markups also attract GST. Large outward remittances under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme can additionally attract TCS (tax collected at source) depending on the purpose and amount. The exact amounts appear on your bank's statement or invoice; rules change, so check the latest with your bank. For general GST maths, try our GST Calculator.

Where the Rates Come From

Your browser downloads the latest daily rate file from the free, open fawazahmed0 Exchange API, delivered through the jsDelivr CDN with a second mirror if the first is unreachable. If both fail, the converter falls back to European Central Bank reference rates served by Frankfurter. The source and date used are always shown under the result, so you know exactly what you are looking at. These are reference rates published once a day — great for planning and comparison, not live trading quotes. Rates are cached while the page is open, so switching currencies is instant.

Interesting Currency Facts

  • The Nepalese rupee is pegged to the Indian rupee at 1 INR = 1.60 NPR, so that rate barely moves.
  • Several Gulf currencies are pegged to the US dollar, including the UAE dirham, Saudi riyal, Qatari riyal, Omani rial and Bahraini dinar. Their rupee rates move almost exactly with USD/INR.
  • The Kuwaiti dinar is the highest-valued currency unit in the world against the dollar.
  • Some currencies have very small units, such as the Indonesian rupiah and Korean won, so one rupee buys many of them.

For Freelancers and Online Sellers

If you invoice clients in dollars, euros or pounds, convert your rupee rate to the client's currency here to quote a fair price, then compare what your payment platform actually credits with the mid-market value. Platforms often charge a conversion margin on top of their visible fee, which can add up over a year. Keep in mind that income tax is calculated on the rupee value actually received; your bank's foreign inward remittance certificate records it.

Common Mistakes

  • Swapping the direction — "1 USD = 84 INR" is not the same as "1 INR = 84 USD". The converter shows both to avoid confusion.
  • Assuming the bank will give you this rate — it is a benchmark, not a quote.
  • Ignoring the rate date on weekends and holidays, when markets are closed.
  • Comparing only fees instead of the final amount received.

Privacy

There is no sign-up and no tracking of what you convert. The rate files are downloaded directly by your browser from the public services listed above, which see your IP address as any website does. Prompt Minds does not run a server for this tool and stores nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exchange rate does this converter use?

It uses the daily mid-market reference rate — the midpoint between buying and selling prices in global markets — from the free fawazahmed0 Exchange API, with European Central Bank data via Frankfurter as a backup. The date and source are shown under the result.

Why is my bank's rate different?

Banks, cards and money changers add a margin to the mid-market rate and may charge separate fees. The difference is how they earn on conversion, so compare their rate with this one.

How often are the rates updated?

The free sources publish reference rates once a day. Markets move all day, so a live trading rate can differ slightly. The page shows the date of the rate it used.

How many currencies are supported?

30 popular currencies, including the rupee, US dollar, euro, pound, all six Gulf currencies, major Asian currencies, and the Nepalese, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Pakistani currencies.

How do I convert dollars to rupees?

Choose USD in From and INR in To, enter the amount, and read the result. Press the swap button to convert rupees to dollars instead.

How do I convert dirhams to rupees?

Choose AED in From and INR in To. The same works for Saudi riyal (SAR), Qatari riyal (QAR), Kuwaiti dinar (KWD), Omani rial (OMR) and Bahraini dinar (BHD).

Is GST charged on currency conversion in India?

Yes, GST applies to the value of currency exchange services provided by banks and authorised dealers, calculated on a slab-based taxable value. Your bank's invoice or statement shows the exact amount.

What is the cheapest way to send money to India?

Compare the total rupees received after fees from several banks and remittance services against the mid-market result here. The best choice is the one that delivers the most rupees, not the one with the lowest advertised fee.

Can I share a conversion?

Yes. The page address updates with your amount and currencies, so you can copy the link and share it.

Is this rate valid for buying currency?

No. It is a reference rate for information and comparison, not a quote. The rate you get depends on your bank, card or exchange provider.

Is my data stored?

No. Your browser downloads the public rate files directly; those services see your IP address like any website. Prompt Minds stores nothing.

Is this converter free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up and no limits.
