Quick Answer
To scan a QR code from a picture, choose “Scan an image” and upload, drag or paste the photo or screenshot. To scan live, choose “Use camera”, press Start camera and allow access, then point it at the code. The content appears as text with details — such as the website, Wi-Fi password or UPI ID — and links open only if you tap “Open link”. Nothing is uploaded.
What is an Online QR Code Scanner?
A QR code scanner (क्यूआर कोड स्कैनर) reads the black-and-white square codes found on restaurant menus, product packs, payment stands, event tickets, posters, Wi-Fi cards and business cards, and turns them back into the text, link or data they contain. Most phones can scan with the camera app, but what about a QR code in a screenshot, in a PDF, in a WhatsApp image you received, or on your laptop where there is no scanning app? That is where an online scanner helps.
This free scanner reads QR codes in two ways: from an image (upload, drag-and-drop or paste a screenshot) and from a live camera (laptop webcam or phone camera). Everything happens inside your browser — your images and camera feed are never uploaded. It also explains what it found and protects you from common QR tricks: links are never opened automatically, risky links are flagged, and UPI payment codes come with a scam warning.
Key Features
- Scan from images — photos, screenshots, downloads; paste with Ctrl/⌘ + V.
- Scan with a camera — choose the front or back camera.
- Smart results — links, Wi-Fi details, UPI payments, contacts, phone numbers, emails, SMS and map locations.
- Safety first — no automatic opening; warnings for suspicious links.
- Tough codes — multiple image sizes and inverted colours are tried automatically.
- Private — processing stays on your device.
- Copy and history — copy the text; see codes scanned this session.

Stay Safe: QR Code Scams
Because you cannot read a QR code with your eyes, criminals use them to hide dangerous links — sometimes by sticking a fake code over a real one on a parking meter, shop counter or poster. This scanner helps you pause and check before acting:
- Links are never opened automatically. You see the website name first.
- Warnings appear for insecure http links, raw IP addresses, link shorteners that hide the destination, look-alike domains using special characters (punycode), and links containing a user name — a classic phishing trick.
- UPI codes show the payee's UPI ID and name so you can confirm you are paying the right person.
The most common UPI fraud in India works like this: someone “buying” your old sofa or phone sends a QR code and says “scan this to receive the money”. Scanning a QR code and entering your PIN always sends money — you never need a PIN to receive it. If anyone asks you to scan or enter a PIN to get paid, stop.
Tips for a Successful Scan
- Whole code visible — include the three corner squares and the white border (quiet zone) around the code.
- Sharp image — tap to focus on phones; hold steady for webcams.
- Good, even light — avoid glare on glossy menus and screens.
- Size — the code should fill a good part of the frame, not a tiny corner.
- Screens — when scanning a code on another screen, turn up its brightness and avoid moiré by moving slightly further away.
- Crop busy images — if a photo has many codes or lots of clutter, crop it to the one you need with our Crop Image tool.
Scanning a QR Code Inside a PDF or Web Page
QR codes often arrive inside documents — an e-ticket PDF, a fee receipt, an invitation or a web page. You do not need to print them. Zoom in so the code is large and sharp on your screen, take a screenshot (Windows: Win + Shift + S; Mac: ⌘ + Shift + 4; phones: power + volume down on most Android devices, or side button + volume up on iPhone), and paste it straight into this page with Ctrl/⌘ + V. If the screenshot includes a lot of other content, the scanner still searches the whole image, but cropping to the code makes difficult cases faster and more reliable. This also works for codes in presentations, spreadsheets and video calls — pause the video, screenshot, paste.
How It Works
A QR (Quick Response) code, invented by Denso Wave in Japan in 1994, stores data in a grid of dark and light modules, with three large position markers in the corners and built-in error correction that lets it survive scratches and smudges — between about 7% and 30% of the code can be damaged depending on the level used. To decode it, this tool first asks your browser's built-in BarcodeDetector, which some browsers (for example Chrome on Android and macOS) provide. If that is not available, it uses jsQR, an open-source decoder released under the Apache-2.0 licence, loaded only when needed. For images, the scanner tries several resolutions and also inverted colours. In camera mode it checks a frame about four times a second until it finds a code, then switches the camera off.
Privacy
Many online scanners upload your image to a server. This one does not: the picture is read from your disk directly into the page, decoded in memory and discarded. Camera video never leaves the browser either, and the camera is switched off as soon as a code is found, when you press Stop, or when you leave the tab. The session history disappears when you close the page.
Handy Uses
- Read a QR code someone sent you on WhatsApp or email.
- Get the Wi-Fi password from a router sticker or guest card.
- Check where a QR code on a poster really leads before opening it.
- Scan QR codes on your computer without a phone.
- Test QR codes you created with our QR Code Generator or WiFi QR Generator.
Troubleshooting
- “No QR code found” — use a sharper, closer, better-lit image with the whole code visible.
- Camera permission blocked — allow camera access in the browser's site settings (padlock icon in the address bar) and reload.
- Black video — another app may be using the camera; close it and press Start camera again.
- Wrong camera — choose another one from the Camera list.
Quick Glossary
- QR code: a two-dimensional barcode that stores text or data.
- Quiet zone: the blank border a QR code needs around it.
- Error correction: extra data that lets a damaged code still be read.
- Phishing: tricking people into visiting fake sites to steal information.
- Punycode: encoding for international domain names, sometimes misused for look-alike addresses.
Why Use This QR Code Scanner?
It reads codes from your camera or any image, explains what is inside, protects you from risky links and never uploads your data — a safer way to scan on any device.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I scan a QR code from a screenshot or photo?
Choose “Scan an image”, then upload the file, drag it onto the box, or copy the image and press Ctrl+V (⌘+V on Mac). The scanner reads it on your device and shows the content in a moment.
How do I scan a QR code with my laptop webcam?
Choose “Use camera”, press Start camera and allow camera access when the browser asks. Hold the QR code steady in front of the webcam, about 15–30 cm away, in good light. Scanning stops automatically when a code is found.
Is it safe? Are my images uploaded?
Images and camera frames are processed entirely in your browser and are never uploaded or stored. The camera turns off when a code is found, when you press Stop or when you leave the tab.
Will the scanner open links automatically?
No. Links are shown as text first, with the website name and whether it is secure. They open only if you tap “Open link”. Insecure, shortened, IP-address and look-alike links get a warning.
Can I scan a UPI QR code?
Yes. It shows the UPI ID, payee name and amount if the code includes one, so you can check them. Remember: you never need to scan a QR code or enter your UPI PIN to receive money — that is a common scam.
Can it show the Wi-Fi password from a QR code?
Yes. Wi-Fi QR codes contain the network name, security type and password, which the scanner displays so you can connect manually or share it.
Why won't my QR code scan?
Common reasons: the image is blurry or too small, part of the code is cut off, there is glare, or the code has very low contrast. Try a sharper, closer photo with the whole code and its white border visible, and good, even light.
Why is the camera blocked?
You may have denied permission, or another app is using the camera. Allow camera access for this site in your browser's site settings, close other camera apps, and make sure you are on the secure (https) page.
Does it read barcodes too?
This tool is for QR codes. Ordinary 1D product barcodes are not decoded here.
Which browsers are supported?
Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop and mobile. Image scanning works everywhere; live camera scanning needs a device with a camera and permission.
Can it read light QR codes on dark backgrounds?
Yes. The scanner also tries the image with inverted colours, so white-on-black codes are usually read too.
Is the QR Code Scanner free?
Yes. It is free, unlimited and needs no app or sign-up.
