    Quick Answer

To test your webcam and mic, press Start and allow camera and microphone access. Your video appears with its real resolution (for example 1280 × 720) and frame rate, and a bar shows your microphone level as you speak. Choose another camera or mic from the lists, take a snapshot, or record a 5-second clip to hear how you sound. If nothing appears, the tool explains whether permission is blocked, the device is missing or another app is using it.

What is a Webcam & Mic Test?

A webcam and mic test (वेबकैम और माइक टेस्ट) checks that your camera and microphone work before you join an online class, job interview, video call or live stream. Few things are more stressful than discovering, in front of everyone, that your camera shows a black screen or nobody can hear you. A quick test beforehand lets you fix problems in private.

This free tool runs in your browser. It shows your live video with its real resolution and frame rate, a live microphone level bar, lets you switch devices, take a snapshot and record a short clip to hear yourself — and nothing is uploaded.

    Key Features

    • Live camera preview, mirrored like a mirror (switchable).
    • Actual resolution and frame rate reported by your device.
    • Microphone level bar with peak level and sample rate.
    • Camera and microphone pickers for external devices.
    • Snapshot download and a 5-second recording to play back.
    • Plain-language fixes for blocked, missing or busy devices.

    How to Use It

    1. Press Start camera & mic test.
    2. When your browser asks, click Allow for the camera and microphone.
    3. Check your video: are you clear, well lit and centred?
    4. Say "testing 1-2-3" and watch the level bar.
    5. Press Record 5-second test and play it back.
    6. Press Stop when you're done — the camera light should turn off.

    Understanding Your Camera Results

    ResolutionNameGood for
    640 × 480VGA / 480pBasic calls only
    1280 × 720HD / 720pMost video calls and classes
    1920 × 1080Full HD / 1080pInterviews, streaming, recording
    3840 × 21604KProfessional content

Frame rate is how many pictures per second the camera sends. 24–30 fps looks smooth for calls; 60 fps is great for streaming movement. Note that meeting apps often reduce resolution to save bandwidth, so your call may look lower quality than this test even when the camera is fine.

    Understanding Your Microphone Results

    • Level bar: for normal speech at your usual distance it should reach roughly a third to half. Constantly in the red means too loud or too close; barely moving means too quiet.
    • Peak level: the highest level reached since you started — handy to check you aren't clipping.
    • Sample rate: 44.1 or 48 kHz is normal for computer audio.
    • Recording: the best test of all — listen for echo, hum, hiss or a muffled sound.

    Fixing Common Camera Problems

    Permission blocked

Click the camera or lock icon at the left of the address bar, set Camera and Microphone to Allow, and reload the page. Also check your operating system: Windows — Settings → Privacy & security → Camera / Microphone; macOS — System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera / Microphone, and enable your browser.

Camera in use by another app

Only one app can use most cameras at a time. Close Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet tabs, Skype, WhatsApp or OBS, then press Start again. Restarting the browser often helps.

    No camera found

For external webcams, try another USB port and avoid unpowered hubs. On laptops, look for a privacy shutter over the lens, a function key (often F8 or F10) that disables the camera, or a camera switch in the BIOS or manufacturer app.

    Dark or grainy picture

Add light in front of you — a window or lamp behind the screen. Avoid a bright window behind you, which turns you into a silhouette. Clean the lens with a soft cloth.

    Fixing Common Microphone Problems

    • Wrong microphone selected: choose the right one from the list here and in your meeting app.
    • Too quiet: raise the input volume in system sound settings; move closer.
    • Muted headset: check the mute switch on the cable or earbuds.
    • Echo: use headphones so the mic doesn't pick up your speakers.
    • Background noise: turn off fans, close windows and enable noise suppression in your meeting app.
    • Bluetooth earbuds sound poor: many switch to a low-quality "headset" mode when the mic is on — a wired headset or the laptop mic may sound better.

Checklist Before an Interview or Class

    1. Run this test 10 minutes early.
    2. Camera at eye level, face centred, a little space above your head.
    3. Light in front, plain and tidy background.
    4. Record a 5-second clip and listen with headphones.
    5. Check your connection with our Internet Speed Test — at least 3 Mbps upload for smooth HD video.
    6. Close other apps, mute notifications and plug in your laptop charger.

Testing on a Phone or Tablet

Mobile browsers support camera and microphone access too. Press Start, allow access, and use the Camera list to switch between the front and back cameras where your phone offers both. If permission was denied earlier, open your browser's site settings (in Chrome: the lock icon → Permissions) or the phone's app settings for your browser, enable Camera and Microphone, and reload. Phones often report a lower preview resolution than the camera's photo resolution — that's normal for video.

    Online Exams and Proctored Tests

Many online exams, certification tests and remote interviews use proctoring software that needs your webcam and microphone throughout. Test both here first, in the same browser the exam requires, and keep the room well lit and quiet. If the exam needs a specific browser or app, close every other program that might grab the camera. Doing this the day before gives you time to borrow a webcam or headset if something fails.

    Thinking of Buying a Webcam?

If your built-in camera tests at 480p, looks grainy even in good light or drops below 20 fps, an external webcam is a worthwhile upgrade for regular calls. Look for 1080p at 30 fps, a wide-enough field of view for your setup, and a built-in privacy shutter. A separate USB or headset microphone usually improves your sound more than any webcam microphone. After buying, run this test again to confirm the new device is selected and working.

    How Browsers Protect Your Camera

Websites can only use your camera and microphone after you allow it, and only on secure (https) pages. Browsers show an indicator — a red dot, camera icon or recording symbol in the tab or address bar — whenever a page is using them, and you can revoke permission at any time from the site settings. This tool asks for access only when you press Start, and releases the devices as soon as you press Stop or leave the page.

    Privacy

The camera and microphone are accessed through your browser's standard permission prompt and the stream stays on your device. Nothing is sent to Prompt Minds or anyone else. Recordings exist only in your browser's memory for playback and disappear when you close the page. Press Stop to release the camera — the light on most webcams turns off immediately.

    Common Mistakes

    • Testing in a different browser from the one used for the meeting — permissions are per browser.
    • Ignoring the operating-system privacy switch, which overrides browser permission.
    • Sitting with a window behind you, which darkens your face.
    • Using speakers without headphones, causing echo for others.
    • Testing only the camera — the microphone is just as likely to be the problem, so always record and listen.
    • Leaving the camera running after testing — press Stop to release it.

    Quick Glossary

    • Resolution: picture size in pixels, such as 1280 × 720.
    • Frame rate (fps): pictures per second.
    • Sample rate: how many times per second sound is measured.
    • Clipping: distortion when the sound is too loud for the microphone.
    • Mirroring: flipping the preview left-to-right so it behaves like a mirror.

    Why Use This Test?

It checks both camera and microphone in seconds, shows real technical details, lets you hear yourself and explains fixes in plain language — privately, without installing anything, on any computer, phone or tablet with a modern browser. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I test my webcam online?

Press Start, allow camera access when asked, and your live video appears with its resolution and frame rate. If you have more than one camera, pick it from the Camera list.

How do I test my microphone?

After pressing Start, speak normally. The level bar should move — roughly a third to half of the way for normal speech. Record the 5-second test and play it back to hear the quality.

Why is my camera not working?

The most common reasons are blocked permission, another app using the camera (Zoom, Teams, Meet, WhatsApp desktop), a disabled camera in system privacy settings, or a loose USB cable. The tool shows which problem it detected.

How do I allow camera access in Chrome?

Click the camera icon or the lock icon in the address bar, set Camera and Microphone to Allow, then reload the page. On Windows also check Settings → Privacy → Camera; on macOS check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.

What resolution should my webcam have?

720p (1280 × 720) at 24–30 frames per second is good for video calls; 1080p is better for interviews, streaming and recording. Many laptop cameras are 720p.

Why is my frame rate low?

Poor lighting makes cameras slow down to collect more light, so add light in front of you. A busy USB port or an older computer can also lower the frame rate.

Why is my mic level very low?

Raise the input volume in your system sound settings, make sure the right microphone is selected, move closer, and check that a headset mic isn't muted by a switch on the cable.

Is my video recorded or uploaded?

No. The video and sound stay on your device. A recording is made only when you press Record, and it plays back only on this page until you close it.

Can I test an external webcam or USB mic?

Yes. Plug it in, press Start and choose it from the Camera or Microphone list.

    Does it work on phones?

Yes, in modern mobile browsers. Choose between front and back cameras from the list where the phone allows it.

Why does my video look mirrored?

The preview is mirrored by default because that feels natural, like a mirror. Others usually see you unmirrored. Press Mirror to switch.

Is the webcam and mic test free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up.
