Quick Answer
Choose English or Hindi and a duration (1, 3 or 5 minutes), click in the box and start typing the text shown — the timer starts with your first key. Live WPM, accuracy and errors update as you type. At the end you get net WPM (only correct characters count, 5 characters = 1 word), gross WPM, accuracy, correct words and your personal best.
What is a Typing Speed Test?
A typing speed test (टाइपिंग स्पीड टेस्ट) measures how fast and how accurately you type, usually in words per minute (WPM). It is useful for students preparing for government exams with skill tests, job seekers applying for data-entry, office or content roles, writers and coders who want to work faster, and anyone curious about their keyboard skills. Regular testing also shows your progress as you practise.
This free test works in English and Hindi, lets you choose 1, 3 or 5 minutes, and uses freshly shuffled original sentences every time so you cannot simply memorise the passage. You see your live speed, accuracy and errors as you type, with the current word highlighted, and a detailed result at the end — including your personal best for each language and duration.

How WPM and Accuracy Are Calculated
Words vary in length, so typing tests use a standard “word” of 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation. That makes results comparable between passages and languages.
- Gross WPM = all characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes.
- Net WPM = correctly typed characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. This is the main score.
- Accuracy = correct characters ÷ typed characters × 100.
- Correct words = complete words that exactly match the text, also shown per minute.
Example: in a 3-minute test you type 780 characters, of which 741 are correct. Gross WPM = 780 ÷ 5 ÷ 3 = 52. Net WPM = 741 ÷ 5 ÷ 3 ≈ 49. Accuracy = 741 ÷ 780 = 95%. Characters are compared position by position with the passage, so a skipped letter shifts the rest of the word out of line — another reason accuracy matters.
What Is a Good Typing Speed?
| Net WPM | Level |
|---|---|
| Below 25 | Beginner — learning the keyboard |
| 25–39 | Developing — fine for casual use |
| About 40 | Commonly quoted adult average |
| 50–60 | Fast — suits most office and data-entry jobs |
| 70+ | Professional — transcription, content and coding pros |
Accuracy should stay above 95%. At 90% accuracy, one character in ten is wrong — in a 300-word document that is dozens of mistakes to fix later.
Typing Tests for Government Exams
Several Indian recruitment exams include a typing skill test. SSC exams for posts such as Lower Division Clerk and Junior Secretariat Assistant have commonly required 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi, calculated as roughly 10,500 or 9,000 key depressions per hour at 5 key depressions per word. Data Entry Operator posts may instead use key depressions per hour. State exams, courts and banks have their own rules, and some allow the Kruti Dev (Remington layout) or Mangal (Inscript layout) fonts. Always confirm the exact speed, duration, language, layout and error rules in the official notification, then practise with 5-minute tests here to build stamina.
Typing Hindi on Your Device
The Hindi test uses standard Unicode Devanagari, so you need a Hindi keyboard:
- Windows — add Hindi in Settings › Time & language › Language & region, then choose a keyboard such as Hindi Traditional (Inscript) or a phonetic option, and switch with Windows key + Space.
- Mac — System Settings › Keyboard › Input Sources, add Hindi (Devanagari – QWERTY or Inscript).
- Android and iPhone — add Hindi in your keyboard app (for example Gboard or the iOS keyboard).
Not set up yet? Our Hindi Typing tool converts English letters to Hindi as you type, and the Kruti Dev to Unicode converter helps if you work with older Kruti Dev documents. Note that this test checks Unicode typing; Kruti Dev / Remington practice needs that specific font and layout.
Phone vs Computer Keyboard
You can take the test on a phone, but expect different numbers. Thumb typing on a touchscreen is usually slower than ten-finger typing on a physical keyboard, and auto-correct, word suggestions and swipe typing can change what you type in ways the test counts as errors. For a result you can compare with exam requirements, use a laptop or desktop keyboard, turn off any text-expansion tools, and sit as you would in the exam hall. On phones, the test is still a fun way to compare thumb speed with friends — just compare phone scores with phone scores.
Why the Passage Changes Every Time
If a test always shows the same paragraph, your score soon measures memory rather than typing skill. Here, each new test shuffles a pool of original sentences written for Prompt Minds into a fresh passage long enough for the chosen duration, even at very high speeds. The sentences use everyday vocabulary, a natural mix of short and long words and normal punctuation, similar to the letters, reports and paragraphs used in office work and skill tests. Easy mode strips capitals and punctuation for beginners who want to focus on finger placement.
How to Type Faster
- Learn touch typing. Rest your fingers on the home row — ASDF for the left hand, JKL; for the right. The small bumps on F and J help you find them without looking.
- Use the right finger for each key even when it feels slower at first.
- Look at the screen, not your hands.
- Accuracy first. Slow down until you reach 95%+, then speed up gradually.
- Practise little and often — 10–15 minutes daily beats one long weekly session.
- Sit well — straight back, relaxed shoulders, wrists level and the screen at eye height.
- Track progress — take the same 3-minute test every few days and watch your personal best grow.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Racing and ignoring errors — net WPM drops and bad habits form.
- Looking down at the keyboard — it breaks your rhythm.
- Testing only for one minute — exams last longer; build stamina with 5-minute tests.
- Typing with two fingers — it caps your speed; learn touch typing early.
Troubleshooting
- Hindi letters do not appear — switch your device keyboard to Hindi first.
- Phone auto-correct changes words — turn off auto-correct and predictive text for accurate results.
- The box stopped accepting text — the test has ended; press New test.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
By the standard rule that one “word” equals 5 characters, including spaces. Net WPM = correctly typed characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Gross WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong. For example, 1,000 correct characters in 5 minutes is 1,000 ÷ 5 ÷ 5 = 40 WPM.
What is a good typing speed?
About 40 WPM is a commonly quoted average for adults who type regularly. 25–35 WPM is a reasonable beginner level, 50–60 WPM is fast and suits most office jobs, and 70+ WPM is professional. Accuracy above 95% matters as much as speed.
How is accuracy calculated?
Accuracy = correct characters ÷ characters typed × 100. If you typed 500 characters and 475 matched the text, your accuracy is 95%.
Can I take a Hindi typing test?
Yes. Choose हिंदी. You need a Hindi keyboard on your device — for example Inscript or a phonetic keyboard on Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone. The test uses Unicode text (like Mangal), not Kruti Dev or Remington fonts.
What typing speed is needed for SSC exams?
SSC skill tests have commonly required 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi for posts like LDC/JSA, based on 5 key depressions per word (10,500 or 9,000 key depressions per hour). Requirements differ by exam and year, so always check the official notification.
When does the timer start?
With your first keystroke in the typing box, so you can read the text before you begin.
Does the test count backspace corrections?
The score compares what is in the box with the text when the test ends. Fixing a mistake with backspace turns that character correct again, but the time you spent fixing it lowers your speed — just like a real exam.
Why is paste disabled?
To keep results honest. Pasting would let anyone claim an impossible speed, so the box only accepts typed input.
What is the difference between easy and normal text?
Easy text removes capital letters and punctuation (and the Hindi full stop ।), so you can focus on letters and rhythm. Normal text uses complete sentences with capitals and punctuation, like real documents and exams.
Is my personal best saved?
Yes, in your browser on this device, separately for each language and duration. It is not uploaded anywhere. Clearing browser data resets it.
How can I improve my typing speed?
Learn touch typing with fingers resting on the home row (ASDF JKL;), keep your eyes on the screen, aim for 95%+ accuracy before pushing speed, and practise 10–15 minutes daily. Most people improve noticeably within a few weeks.
Is the typing test free?
Yes. It is free, unlimited and needs no sign-up.
